The health office staff promote students health through early identification and detection of hearing and vision difficulties. All children are screened for vision and hearing in accordance with the New Mexico Department of Health guidelines. If a parent/guardian requests exclusion from screenings they must provide the school Health Office with written notification of this request. If you have any questions related to screenings please contact your School Nurse

Why are students screened for hearing and vision?

Why do we screen your child's vision at school?

Children with vision problems usually don't complain of pain and you may not see any changes in your child's behavior related to vision problems. It is common for the good eye to take over for the weaker eye. Children with a "lazy eye" will not outgrow the condition, and it requires treatment to correct. If the school nurse has a concern with your child's vision after being screened, families will receive a letter in your child's backpack. Some vision problems that are not detected and treated, can lead to permanent vision loss.

If you have concerns about seeing an eye doctor, insurance or paying for glasses, please contact your school nurse. Assistance is available for all families

Why do we screen your child's hearing at school?

Children that have a difficulty hearing commonly have difficulties completing classwork and listening to their instructors.
