The Pirates conceded three goals in the middle of the first half, and weren't really able to get any offense going in a 4-1 loss to the host Bucks. Junior Kevin Killeen scored a late consolation goal, but in the end it was Buckeye's speed and quickness, together with their relentless pursuit of the ball that proved to be the difference. River ends its season with an overall record of 10-6-2.
River needed just less than two minutes to score its earliest goal of the season in route to a 7-0 victory over Lutheran West. Junior Chase DeClerck put classmate Nate Keeling into space down the right wing, and his deep cross was headed home by classmate Gold Rrustemaj for the 1-0 lead. Rrustemaj laid back a ball for DeClerck to control, shimmy, and then fire home with his left foot in the 26' to make it 2-0. The lead jumped to 3-0 after Keeling sent in a nearly identical cross in the 35' for sophomore Hogan Kern to head home. Second half goals came from senior Athan Tsigas (penalty kick), sophomore Emmanuel Loizos (cleaned up trash on a corner kick), and junior Michael Triplett (poked in a 1v1). The shutout was senior co-captain Connor O'Toole's eight of the season and improved the team to 10-5-2 on the season.
The win gives the Pirates their 24th Sectional Title, dating back to 1986, when the OHSAA re-configured their playoff brackets. The boys are on a current streak of 11 Sectional Championships in a row, dating back to 2009, and the team hasn't lost its first playoff game since 2004.
Next up for River is a trip to #2-seed Buckeye for a match on Tuesday night, 22 October at 7pm.
A very tight Riverwood Cup match with the Rangers was decided by an opportunistic strike from one of the Lakewood forwards, late in the first half to give his team a 1-0 victory. For the first time since the two teams began playing for the Cup, the Purple & Gold won in regulation and were able to take the coveted trophy back to their Hilliard Boulevard home.
The JV Pirates fell to the JV Rangers in the Junior Riverwood Cup clash by a score of 2-0. The youngsters wrap up their season with a record of 4-10-1.
Varsity earned the #3 seed in the Elyria Boys Division II District and will begin its playoff journey next Saturday against the winner of a Sectional Semifinal match between #6-seed Lutheran West and #11-seed Padua. That match will be played at home, kickoff at 1pm.
The Pirates wrapped up their Great Lakes Conference schedule the best way possible - with two shutout victories. Varsity defeated the host Invaders 2-0 with both of goals coming in the second half. Senior Andrew Fry scored the first, with a penalty kick two minutes after half. Junior Chase DeClerck scored the second, as his rip from 20 yards out went through the goalie's hands and into the net. The win is the Pirates' third 2-0 this season, the most since 2013 when the team had four.
The JV team won 4-0 behind goals from freshmen Charlie Russell and Fionn Harte, and sophomores Jack Bowers and Emmanuel Loizos. Varsity's record is now 9-4-2 overall and 6-2 in GLC, which locks up third place. JV is 4-9-1 overall and 4-2 GLC.
On a night when the Varsity team honored its six seniors, the team did so in the best way possible - with a 4-0 Great Lakes Conference victory over Parma. Underclassmen did all of the scoring on the night, but that didn't dampen anyones spirits - nor did the rain that fell for most of both games. In the 9', sophomore Gold Rrustemaj stripped a Parma defender of the ball on the right wing and took a couple touches before centering a pass that junior Chase DeClerck prodded home for the 1-0 lead. After halftime, the pair combined again to make it 2-0, this time with a DeClerck header off a Rrustemaj corner in the 50'. Eight minutes later, junior Conor McKenna fired home from about 25 yards out after a poorly-cleared Pirates corner kick fell to his right foot. River's final goal of the night came off another corner kick, but this time it was sent into the net by the head of a Parma defender. The Maroon and White are now 8-4-2 overall and 5-2-0 in GLC play.
JV defeated their Parma counterparts 4-1, with the goals coming from sophomore Omar Abazied (2), freshman Fionn Harte, and sophomore Riley Goodill, who celebrated his birthday in style with a 35-yard bombazo. JV is now 3-9-0 overall and 3-2-0 in GLC. The youngsters will play at Lutheran West tomorrow at 5pm, and both teams' next game will be on Monday at Normandy.
Varsity's recent roller coaster of results continued with a 2-2 draw at Lutheran West. Despite being in control of possession through the first half, River only scored one goal. Senior Andrew Fry latched onto a pass from junior Chase DeClerck and finished to the near post in the 6'. That was the third 3-to-12 goal in the last four games for the Pirates. The home side tied the game in the 50' and then DeClerck scored a goal of his own to put the visitors back on top. In the 68', the Longhorns got their second goal of the game, and despite River putting tons of pressure on the L-W backline and goal, a third goal wasn't in the offing. The result takes Varsity to 7-4-2.
Next up for both Rivers teams is a Great Lakes Conference visit from Parma on Wednesday, 2 October. JV plays at 5pm and Varsity kicks at 7pm, with a Senior Night ceremony to precede that contest.
Less than 48 hours after one of the most disappointing losses in recent seasons, Varsity rebounded with a very satisfying 1-0 win against their D-1 neighbors. The Pirates began the game with a string of 15 consecutive passes, then rode out a flurry of Demon activity in front of senior Connor O'Toole's goal, but the final 20 minutes of the first half were decidedly Maroon and White. The only goal of the game was a result of some juniority - Nate Keeling stole a pass, dribbled forward towards the Westlake penalty area and played a pass to Chase DeClerck, whose lovely heel flick froze the Westlake defense and allowed Keeling to have a 1-on-1 with the visitors goalie, which he smacked into the far corner just two minutes before halftime. The second half was back-and-forth, but River's senior goalie Connor O'Toole provided a steady hand in making seven of his ten saves after the break to help lock up his 17th career shutout.
JV fell to the Jr. D-Men 3-2 with the goals coming from Omar Abazied and Jack Bowers.
V is now 7-4-1 and JV is now 2-9-0. Next up is a V-only match on Thursday at 5pm at Lutheran West - our JV will play there next Thursday.
Visiting Lexington scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 victory over our Varsity, while JV lost 5-0. Both Minutemen teams were more physical than the Pirates, and that caused a lot of the problems the teams were encountering in both games.
Varsity got off to a strong start in this 3-0 victory against Great Lakes Conference match with visiting Elyria Catholic, starting with a goal from senior Andrew Fry in the 11th minute. Junior Chase DeClerck fed the ball to Fry, after a Panthers defender wasn't quick enough to deal with a clearance. Fry scored again, four minutes after halftime, this time on a pretty glancing header off a cross from the right wing from DeClerck. That beautiful goal, with a high degree of difficulty which went into the far upper corner of the goal, was a thing to behold for the true soccer aficionado, but for most, senior Keegan O'Neill's "banger" from about 40 yards out in the 63' was fantastic. To turn a phrase, "Fans dig the long ball." Senior goalie Connor O'Toole made just one save in earning his fourth shutout of the season, and the 16th of his career. V is now 6-3-1.
Next up for the boys is a visit from the #8-ranked D-2 team in Ohio, Lexington. On Saturday, the JV game will kick at 1pm, V will kick at 3pm.
After conceding two early goals to the host Green Wave, the varsity Pirates swept away their GLC rivals in the second half with four straight goals to take the 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon in Parma Heights. Junior Nate Keeling scored twice and classmate Chase DeClerck had two assists in the victory. Senior Athan Tsigas and junior sophomore Jack Maher scored the other goals, which helped take the team to a 5-3-1 overall record and a 3-2 mark in conference games.
Next up for the Pirates is a JV-only game on Monday, 16 Sept at 6pm with Medina's JV-B team, followed by a visit from Elyria Catholic on Wednesday, 18 Sept. JV plays at 5pm, V at 7pm.
River's varsity went up against the #1-ranked boys Division II team in Ohio and lost 4-0 on Wednesday night. Senior co-captain and goalkeeper Connor O'Toole made ten saves in the loss, and at least three of them were at full-stretch. The posts denied the Rockets from scoring three more times, as their touch, movement, and overall experience were too much for the Pirates to break through. The last time Bay scored that many goals on against River was a 4-0 playoff loss in 2012. The Varsity drops to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in Great Lakes Conference matches. Next up for them is a trip to Holy Name on Saturday, 14 Sept for a 2pm match.
Two days prior, the JV Pirates traveled to Bay HS and lost 5-0. Those boys are now 2-5-0 and 2-2-0 GLC. Their next game is Monday, 16 Sept at 6pm when they host Medina's JV-B team.
Not only did RRBS get its second double-win of the season, but it was also the Pirates' second double conference win of the season. Varsity defeated Valley Forge 2-1 in a game that it controlled for the majority of the 80 minutes, but that only saw them score the pair of goals. Senior Athan Tsigas created the first goal in the 23rd minute when his goal-bound shot during a corner kick scrum struck the hand of a Patriot defender. Classmate Andrew Fry struck the ball hard to the goalie's right and underneath his save attempt. Two minutes later, Tsigas created another penalty kick with another poke pass that hit a defender's arm. Junior Chase DeClerck smoked his shot high to the keeper's left, but he was able to make the save. River's second goal came with about ten minutes left in the game, when junior Conor McKenna latched onto a give-n-go pass from Gold Rrustemaj and then drove into the visitors' penalty area, before his left-footed shot ricocheted in off a defender's leg. Valley Forge nicked a goal with four minutes left, but the result was never in question.
River's JV won a see-saw 3-2 contest. Freshman Charlie Russell scored in the first half to give Coach Mike Moore's boys a 1-0 lead they held until seven minutes after half. Valley Forge scored in the 41st and 58th minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Diego Norena dribbled through most of the Patriot defense a minute after VF's second to knot the match at 2-2, and then the recent transfer from the Chicago headed home the game-winner after much goal-mouth chaos to give the Maroon & White the win.
V is now 4-2-1 and 2-1-0 GLC, while JV is now 2-5 and 2-1-0. Next up are the Bay games - JV plays at Bay HS on Monday at 5pm, while V hosts the Rockets on Wednesday, 11 Sept at 5pm. The girls respective teams will play their Bay counterparts at 7pm both nights.
River took a double loss for the second time this year, with JV falling to the host Bucks 5-0 and the Varsity losing a tough 2-0 decision.
In the first half of the Varsity game, senior co-captain and goalkeeper Connor O'Toole made three key saves and relied on the crossbar to help keep the scoreline at 0-0. The second half was a bit more open, with both teams having decent chances to score, but it was Buckeye, who scored twice in a minute with ten left to play, who was more decisive in front of goal.
JV is now 1-5 on the season and 1-1-0 in Great Lakes Conference play, while V is 3-2-1 and 1-1-0, respectively. Both teams host Valley Forge on Saturday evening. JV kicks at 5pm, V at 7pm.
This edition of the Pirates' annual Rockport Cup match with Fairview was as competitive as any match they've had with the Warriors since 2010. In the end, the home team's perseverance wore down the visitors and two second-half scores kept the trophy in maroon and white hands again.
Sophomores Jack Maher scored River's first goal in the 45th minute after streaking forward to get on a long through ball, and he got some help from classmate Gold Rrustemaj who kept the play alive, before he slotted the ball home from the top of the box. With eight minutes left, Rrustemaj got a goal of his own after a neat 1-2 with junior Nate Keeling freed him into the box with only the Fairview goalie to beat. Senior Connor O'Toole made eight saves to earn his third straight shutout. Varsity is now 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Great Lakes Conference play.
JV won its first game of the season by a score of 3-0 with two goals from Omar Abazied and one from Jack Bowers. The team is now 1-3-0.
River put together its best all-around performance of the young season in earning a 2-0 road win at Padua. Combining a possession-based attack with coordinated defending made the victory decisive, and senior goalie Connor O'Toole earned his 14th career shutout. Junior Chase DeClerck did enough to knock in sophomore Jack Maher's 4th minute corner kick to give the Pirates an early advantage that seemed like it would be enough. River outshot Padua 11-3 for the game, but just couldn't get another attempt past the Bruins goalie until late in the contest. With three minutes left, junior Chris Fry collected a clearance and fed classmate Conor McKenna, who looked and sent a long through ball to Maher, who made no mistake after a 30-yard run by placing a lefty toe-ball past the home 'keeper for the final 2-0 margin.
JV lost 4-0 to a bigger, more physical Padua side.
It had been 20 years since these two rivals who pioneered high school soccer in Greater Cleveland last did battle - 7,262 days, to be exact, when the Pirates got blown out 7-0 by Hawken, who eventually lost in the 1999 Boys D-2 State Final. This visit by River ended with a 0-0 draw, which was a very fair result. Senior co-captains Keegan O'Neill and Connor O'Toole commanded a defense that bent but didn't break to take the team's record to 1-1-1 on the season.
JV fell to the host Hawks 4-2, with the goals coming from sophomores Mark Quaiser and Ian Tomsik. The team is now 0-3 for the season.
Varsity lost to an extremely solid Chagrin Falls team 3-1 in its 2019 home opener. River's goal came from junior Chris Fry, who had pushed up from his defensive midfielder position late in the game, got onto a through ball from classmate Chase DeClerck to slot the ball home with his left foot to the far post. Senior goalie and co-captain Connor O'Toole made four saves in the loss, which makes our head-to-head record with the Tigers this decade 3 wins, 4 losses, 3 draws with 14 goals for and 18 goals against.
JV dropped a 3-1 decision, with the lone tally coming from a Mark Quaiser free kick late in the second half.
Kicking off the season with an extremely rare Friday Night Fútbol game, the Pirates traveled to Orange High School for the first time since 2007. Varsity came from behind to earn a 2-1 win, which gives River eight wins in season-openers this decade. The home side got their goal in the 19th minute, after a thorough ball led to a 1v1 between the Orange attacker and River goalkeeper Connor O'Toole. The senior made the initial save, but the rebound landed at the feet of the Lions' forward, and he shot home into an open goal for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes after halftime, senior Andrew Fry smashed home a penalty kick, awarded for a handball in the box, to knot the score. Three minutes later, Fry drove a long free kick from midfield that junior Chase DeClerck nodded past the onrushing Orange goalie to give River the 2-1 advantage. O'Toole, the 2018 Great Lakes Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, made eight important saves to help the visiting team get the win.
JV was defeated 3-2, with both goals coming from sophomore Mark Quaiser. The first was a penalty kick he converted in the 32nd minute and the second was a 40-yard lob over the Lions' goalie with three minutes remaining in the match.
