Classroom Expectations:
We will take time the first week of school to define what each of these expectations mean to our students. The posters we create are always up in the classroom and referred to regularly.
Rocky River City Schools use PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) as a framework for meeting social, behavioral, learning, and emotional needs of all children. If you would like to look deeper into this framework, please refer to ODE PBIS
Our main goal is for each student in the classroom to feel cared for, seen, supported, encouraged, and able to focus. That means our choices and behavior effect our quality of learning and our classrooms learning environment.
Arrival: Students may enter the building at 8:00. They must report to designated areas prior to classrooms. At 8:15 students are able to go directly to classrooms and the attendance bell is at 8:30.
We have Lunch from 10:33-10:55 and Recess from 10:55-11:18
Our Specials are daily from 1:01-1:52
Monday: Fitness - be sure to have the right shoes on to participate
Tuesday: Music
Wednesday: Library - be sure to bring books that need to be returned
Thursday: Art - art shirt
Friday: Technology - headphones
Dismissal is slightly staggered by grade level: Third Grade will leave classrooms at 2:40
We do our best to have a consistent and predictable rhythm to our day at school. Of course special assemblies, field trips, and events can change things but overall you will find that our classroom runs closely to the routine on the right. Students see a slide like this each morning as they enter the room. It gives them a heads up of any changes and lets them know what to expect while reminding them of the special that day, to turn in homework, and to complete their morning work once they are settled.
Example Daily Routine
We complete our planners at the end of each day. I have a model planner that is projected onto the screen (example to the left). Students participate in filling out their own planner and making sure they have any papers that need to go home for that day put into their take home folder.
We begin the year keeping track of our reading with a weekly reading log/writing activities and by the semester, students will be encouraged to sign up for the Rocky River Library's reading program to continue their reading practice. It's important to make reading part of your home routine in some way. Fundations has a packet of activities that go along with each week. These are optional. I will reward students for their extra effort. I only recommend these being required if your child needs additional practice with a concept.
Our math program has a homework page that goes with each lesson. I ask that the front be completed. There is a back with higher level thinking questions that I encourage but are not required. I reward students for their extra effort.
There could be an additional project, writing, or reading assignment here or there and there is a possibility if work is not getting done in class that it comes home to complete.
With such an early lunch, our afternoon can be long without an energy boost from a quick snack after specials. We need to provide a respectful, caring, and safe environment for all in our classroom. Please do NOT bring in snacks with nuts or processed in plants with nuts. Nut products are allowed in the Commons, the classroom needs to be a nut free environment. I also ask that it is a healthy snack; candy, chips, milk/juice/pop/sports drinks etc. are all perfectly fine to pack for lunch if you so choose. We also only have water in the classroom to drink unless otherwise needed or special occasion. We have carpet in the room and any spills can be problematic and challenging to clean up.
