Our English Language Arts curriculum is called Wit and Wisdom from Great Minds. We pair it with the phonics program, Fundations from Wilson. These are research based curriculums that have excellent intervention and extension options. If you would like to look at Wit and Wisdom in detail, click HERE. There are four Modules that we will work through this year. See how you can support them at home using the reference guide on the left.
Module 1: The Sea
Module 2: Outer Space
Module 3: New Home
Module 4: Artists Make Art
We collect three scores throughout the year from all third graders using AIMS Web. Once in each of the Fall, Winter, and Spring. The scores serve as benchmarks of growth and inform our decision making to provide targeted reading instruction needed throughout the year. We also tap deeper into strengths and supports for decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension using simple probes offered through Really Great Reading.
WIN Time: What I Need!
WIN time is a unique 30 minutes in our day that allows for tremendous flexibility to provide for decoding, reading fluency, and reading comprehension support and enrichment. Our whole third grade team is involved along with our small group literacy instructors to identify the reading skill needs of all third grade students. This means that based on what your child needs as a support or extension of their reading instruction, they may have a different teacher for that 30 minute portion of our Language Arts block 3-5 times a week. More information to come.
We begin the year keeping track of our daily reading using this bingo sheet of activities. Throughout the week, find time to read and complete a bingo on the sheet by doing the four activities in a row (choose horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). Bring in ONE of the four completed activities to share in a small group of peers.
Don't underestimate the power of our local library. The staff is very helpful, provide great suggestions of books for kids to try based on their interests and reading development. Fundations, by Wilson, is supported by research as a phonics program to teach decoding, encoding (spelling), and fluency to build vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. The district has used this program throughout K-3rd grade. This continuation provides consistency and depth to reading development as an advanced elementary aged learner.
Packets will come home weekly with a description and examples of what concepts we are working on in class. These packets also provide ways for students to practice these skills. Completing these packets is optional. We will have formal assessment of the skils learned approximately every other week. If you are looking for more information about the program, click HERE.
Cursive instruction is part of our Fundations curriculum. It's important for students to be able to recognize and read all different types of print, font, and cursive representations of our written language. Even if cursive isn't used daily as an adult, this instruction aides in recognition of and ability to read cursive as well as fine motor skill development.
Opportunities to practice cursive outside of the classroom come home in the Fundations packets and are usually the last page or two.
