We use enVision curriculum from the Savvas Learning Company for our Mathematics instruction. Daily math problems that come home for homework always have an explanation of the concept we practiced that day and a handful of practice problems to complete. Students should bring their work back to school. I give completion credit for doing the work and being responsible for bringing it back in. I never want homework to cause an unreasonable amount of stress, anxiety, or emotions so please stop working on it if this happens. Just have your child bring it back into class and we will walk through it together.
Being fluent in math facts means quickly recalling answers to simple facts (-, +, x, / 0-20) faster than being able to use a strategy to solve them. We will be reviewing and practicing addition and subtraction facts and our new focus in third grade is multiplication. There isn't a perfect or magical way to learn facts; songs, flashcards, timed assessments, apps, worksheets, games, etc. are all great. It's more about finding the right fit of activity for your child. Click HERE for more information and additional resources. We will work in a variety of ways in the classroom to strengthen automaticity and focus on growing this skill.
Our Mathematics assessments along with others have a variety of assessment question types. They receive a ranking in the depth of knowledge (DOK) that the question measures; either a 1, 2, or 3. The image to the left defines each depth of knowledge type of question. Assessment cover sheets may reflect the DOK in communicating mastery level of a skill or concept.
