The Social Discipline Window describes four basic approaches to maintaining social norms and behavioral boundaries. The four are represented as different combinations of high or low control and high or low support. The restorative domain combines both high control and high support and is characterized by doing things with people, rather than to them or for them. Our goal is to be restorative by providing students and adults with the conditions for High Accountability and High Support. To do this, we rely on consequences that provide accountability and interventions that provide support.
Consequences Provide Accountability. As a school community, adults use consequences not only to show concern for student behavior that is unskillful, inappropriate or unacceptable, but also to hold students accountable for their choices.
Interventions Provide Support. As educators, it is our responsibility to engage students in a learning process to support their growth and future decision making. Restoring relationships, learning social emotional skills, and repairing harm all require personal reflection, learning and growth.
