Our School Psychologists and School Social Workers provide counseling to students with special needs in all grade levels throughout the district. Counseling focuses on specific and personal issues that may affect student performance in the school setting. While most counseling sessions are provided as a Related Services indicated in a student's IEP, our team members are here to assist all of our students. If you would like to speak to one of our Psychologists or Social Workers, please contact your case manager by email or telephone, 201-641-0800, and arrangements will be made.
In cases of serious mental health emergencies in school, members from our Crisis Intervention Team, including School Psychologists and/or School Social Workers, work together to assess the situation and make recommendations relevant to the presenting circumstance. This includes:
Referring students with emergent mental health needs (for example, students assessed aspotentially suicidal) directly to appropriate community resources, rather than provide evaluation or counseling services in the school;
Offering children who are not in need of emergent mental health services limited immediate interventions; or
Making evaluations brief and goal-specific by deferring more lengthy evaluations and services to a later time.
