Forest canopies are the uppermost layer of vegetation in forests where trees and tall shrubs intersect to create cover, allowing for a balanced and stable ecosystem. For our project, we measured tree canopy's pre-construction coverage to establish a baseline understanding of tree coverage across the sites and compare the health of the ecosystem post-construction. To measure canopy cover, we used a handheld device called a convex spherical densiometer. It reflects the foliage above allowing the observer to estimate the cover of the vegetation canopy.
The pH scale is arranged from 0 to 14, with the lower end as more acidic solutions and the higher end as more basic solutions, while 7 is considered a neutral pH.
The PASCO Wireless pH sensor is a device with Bluetooth connectivity, used to test the pH of any substance. This device was used to test the pH values of soil collected from different sites in the backwoods of Roland Park Country School.
This graph depicts a comparison of canopy coverage levels taken by a convex spherical densiometer and a light intensity sensor. As illustrated by the graph, the measurements taken by the spherical densiometer and light intensity sensor has little to no correlation. The inconsistency of readings is likely due to user error and impercision with the device while measuring canopy coverage using the convex spherical densiometer.
During our testing of the wireless pH sensor we determined the sensor gave us inconsistent results. We originally tested with set pH buffers of 4.0 and 7.0 to test if it worked. We also tested with a one-to-one solution of water and soil. The results fluctuated to an extent that we were unable to assess the functionality of the instrument leading to inconclusive data. Because of this we lack a graph of comparison .
