The Audio moth is an advanced bird listening device. It is composed of a microphone and a water-resistant case protecting it from the outside environment. As the name moth suggests, the AudioMoth is able to pick up on audible and ultrasonice frequencies while recording at a rate of 8,000 to 384,000 samples per second. This device is a great low-cost, reliable option to uncover the species of birds in a given area.
The data to the left showcases data from Site 1 from 5 am to 8 am. The bar graph shows that the most common birds in that area are the Wood Thrush and the Common Grackle, which are both native to Maryland. In the graph on the far right, the graph is saying that when BirdNET analyzed the recording and determined a species, the identified species that are not found in Maryland usually have a relatively lower confidence score, which makes sense because if a bird is not found in Maryland it is not correctly analyzed.
Birds are a vital part to the health of the ecosystem. They act as pollinators, by transferring pollen they get while feeding on nectar, seed dispersers, through ingesting seeds and defecating in different areas, insect mediators, feeding on various insects, and are indicators of a healthy environment as they keep the natural factors balanced. Without birds acting as natural guards, animal population numbers would be unregulated, and the food cycle would greatly suffer.

Connect the SD card to a computer
Run recordings through BirdNET to see all the species of birds
To validate, our group used the AudioMoth to record different bird calls that played from a computer as well as a siren sound and silent recording. After, we put the various recordings through the BirdNET analyzer to validate that both the AudioMoth is able to obtain recordings from birds as well as validating BirdNET can correctly analyze bird calls and differentiate them.
