Well Aware came and talked to our 8th graders for the IB Community Project Kickoff. The IB Community Project is a culminating independent project chosen by each 8th grade student to better their community in some way. It takes place over a five month period - with inquiry, action, service, and reflection. Well Aware talked about philanthropy and the importance of finding your passion.
Well Aware showed 7th grade the science behind clean water with a Skype call with Well Aware's hydro geologists in Africa.
Theodosia Andrew works with Well Aware - she grew up in Tanzania and actually had to walk for water. She discussed the culture of Sub Saharan Africa about the specifics of having to walk for water with the 6th graders. All students at both schools also read A Long Walk to Water before hearing from Theo.
As part of our school-wide IB Community Project, all students were given a chance to “Walk for Water” on Tuesday, March 26 at Hernandez and March 27 at Grisham in their PE or wellness class. This experience was designed to help each student understand a bit more what millions of children in Tanzania and other countries have to do each and every day just to collect and transport water that is not clean and full of bacteria and other diseases.
Whether they chose to walk with a water bottle, a gallon, several gallons, or for some of the students - the five gallon (forty pound) water cooler bottle, each one participated in their own way. The students were all focused and reflective of the true meaning of "walking for water."
