There are several ways to save time and money by earning college credits at Stony Point High School. Advanced Placement courses, articulated courses, dual credit courses, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program are all options available to students.
Advanced Academics Advice
Always begin with the end in mind. Each college/university determines what they will and will not grant credit for and whether that will apply as credit only or impact GPA. It is imperative that students research these institutions as they make their course decisions in high school.
Advanced Academics (AP)
To receive college credit for an AP course, a student must get a 3 or higher on the AP exam given in May. Texas public universities are required to give college credit; however, they have the option as to what credit is awarded. Check out the AP credit policy for the institutions of higher education you are interested in attending.
There is an extensive list of AP classes available at Stony Point. Please talk with your student’s counselor to put these courses into your student’s schedule.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Students in the IB Diploma Programme earn credit when they earn a score of 4 or higher on an IB exam. By Texas law, students who earn the IB Diploma are guaranteed 24 college credits at any Texas public college or university. To earn the IB Diploma, a student must earn a four or higher on six IB exams across six subject areas and complete the IB Core--Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). To join the IB Programme, contact the IB Coordinator at 512-428-7026.
Austin Community College Dual Credit
While at Stony Point, students are permitted to take up to 12 classes at ACC for FREE. Students can take these classes at anytime. There is an extensive list of Dual Credit courses available. Please see your counselor to get a copy of this list.
Additionally, Stony Point provides a Dual Credit Cohort for Juniors and Seniors. This is a great opportunity for students to take Dual Credit within their Stony Point schedule. Again please ask your counselor about this opportunity.
ACC will award college credit for Career and Technical (CTE) courses if these 2 requirements are met - student posts an 80% or higher and the student take 6 credits (2 ACC courses). The student must provide a copy of their high school transcript to ACC to get these classes posted. Please check with your CTE teacher on articulated credit.
UT OnRamps Dual Enrollment
University of Texas provides dual credit through OnRamps. In these courses, the student will receive 2 grades. Their Stony Point grade is based upon their homework and classwork. Their UT grade will be the average of 7 online tests given through the school year. At the end of the course, students have the option to opt out of their UT grade. This grade will disappear and will not be posted on a UT transcript.
