Journalism: Yearbook

Program of Study Course Progression

1st Course - choose between Journalism I or Photojournalism

2nd Course - Advanced Journalism Yearbook I

3rd Course - Advanced Journalism Yearbook II

4th Course - Advanced Journalism Yearbook III

Journalism I teaches all aspects of reporting and yearbook and newspaper design. Students are also exposed to the computer programs they will need to be effective on either the yearbook or newspaper staff. Students will write a great deal in this class.

Photojournalism - This course explores photography with appropriate journalistic photos and captions. Students will operate a digital SLR camera, demonstrate knowledge of shutter speed, aperture, composition, cropping, and print photos. The primary goal of this class is to teach you all about cameras and to allow students to have their photos published in the yearbook and newspaper. Students do not have to have their own equipment. We have a class set of cameras. Students are financially responsible for any equipment checked out over night.

The yearbook staff is responsible for producing the 360 page yearbook. Students are responsible for all photography, reporting and design of the award-winning publication. The class focuses strongly on computer skills, using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

Students do have a choice in tasks. Students coming from photojournalism will primarily take photos and write beat reports. They are responsible for five photo assignments each nine weeks. Three of those can be during the period, but two must be outside the class. A full schedule of opportunities will be provided.

Students coming from Journalism I will focus primarily on design and writing.

All students will be expected to complete a class section page with help.

This course continues the work started in Yearbook I. Students will continue photographing, designing and writing for the yearbook. At this level, students can apply for a leadership role.

Students continuing on to Yearbook III will be expected to be fully prepared to take photographs, design yearbook layouts or complete spreads and serve as student leaders on the publication.
