Journalism: Newspaper

Program of Study Course Progression

1st Course - Journalism I

2nd Course - Advanced Journalism Newspaper I

3rd Course - Advanced Journalism Newspaper III

4th Course - Advanced Journalism Newspaper III

Write up first cJournalism I teaches all aspects of reporting and yearbook and newspaper design. Students are also exposed to the computer programs they will need to be effective on either the yearbook or newspaper staff. Students will write a great deal in this class.

The newspaper staff maintains the school's digital newspaper. The newspaper is completely student produced and managed. Students come up with the ideas, do the reporting and complete the vast majority of the design. While computer skills are taught and are very important, the emphasis of the newspaper staff is writing and reporting. The newspaper strives to tell the story of the school.

Valuable Skills:

• Time Management - students usually have two stories to write for each issue of the newspaper. Mini deadlines are present to help students manage their time, but they will become very aware of deadlines and learn techniques to meet those deadlines.

• Leadership - Students serve as section editors and editors in chief.

• Design - The staff uses Adobe InDesign to produce the paper. This is the industry standard.

• Interviewing - The newspaper can’t be produced without talking to people. You have to reach out to the community to find accurate information and give people a voice in the publication.

• Writing - The newspaper tells factual news and feature stories. While there is some room for opinion pieces or reviews, we do not produce works of fiction or poetry. Narrative writing, however, is story telling.

Students in the second level of the course often take on increasingly challenging stories and have the opportunity for leadership.

In this level, students are still writing for the news site, but are encouraged to take on leadership roles in the publication or mentor fellow students.
