In each quarter of the school year, there are particular goals to cover specific skills and standards (TEKS). Here you will find a list of what 1st Grade music will be covering each 9 weeks according to the district's aligned curriculum. It is important to note that the terminology used here is more sophisticated than how it is communicated to young children.
1st 9 Weeks
- Practice singing, speaking, inner, whisper and calling voices; Listen to adult and children’s voices
- Experience listening examples, highlighting various instruments
- Label musical experiences allegro/largo; Demonstrate allegro/largo
- Label repetition and contrast in form (using folk song repertoire)
- Prepare and label quarter and eighth notes
- Experience high/low to prepare for two tone melodic patterns; Construct short melodic patterns using icons for high/low
- Sing or play instruments using folk song repertoire incorporating music concepts
- Experience music of diverse cultures; Experience songs and games of various cultures (folk, patriotic and seasonal)
- Move to music using locomotor and non-locomotor
- Experience vocal exploration and beat versus rhythm
- Begin creating new musical ideas (new words, motions, instrument timbre, etc.)
- Build listening repertoire and identify steady beat; Practice quiet and focused listening to music
- Experience cross-curricular connections (letters, sounds, rhymes, counting, patterns)
2nd 9 Weeks
- Identify and apply five voices; Identify and label adult/children voices
- Experience listening examples, highlighting various instruments
- Label musical experiences piano/forte; Demonstrate allegro/largo and piano/forte
- Label repetition and contrast in form (using folk song repertoire)
- Practice quarter and eighth notes; Students create 4 beat patterns using quarter and eighth notes;
- Recognize quarter and eighth notes in aural examples (Surprise Symphony)
- Prepare and label so and mi; Construct short melodic patterns using icons for so and mi
- Sing or play instruments using folk song repertoire incorporating music concepts
- Experience music of diverse cultures; Experience songs and games of various cultures (folk, patriotic and seasonal)
- Move to music using locomotor and non-locomotor
- Students perform 2 beat rhythmic ostinato (chant, body percussion and/or unpitched percussion)

3rd 9 Weeks

- Practice so and mi; Recognize so-mi in simple aural examples (Leopold Mozart’s Toy Symphony); Students create 4 beat patterns using so – mi
- Sing or play instruments using folk song repertoire incorporating music concepts
