Unit 6

Helpful Videos

This video reviews adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals using the standard algorithm.

For multiplying decimals, skip to section 3:45 - 7:50 on the video.

For dividing decimals by a whole number, skip to section 7:55 - 8:55 on the video.

Multiplying Decimals by Decimals or Decimals by Whole Numbers

  • Students will need to be able to answer word problems using any method they prefer (standard algorithm, area models, etc). Estimation may be required.
  • Students will need to be able to correctly match a decimal multiplication equation to its matching area model or hundredths grid model.

This is a very thorough video explaining how to multiply tenths by tenths using a HUNDREDTHS GRID. Several examples are included.

Multiplying Decimals using a Hundredths Grid

Nice video showing how to multiply decimals using an AREA MODEL. He explains using several examples and different ways of understanding.

Another very good explanation of decimal multiplication using an Area Model.

Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

  • Students will only be dividing decimals by whole numbers in 5th grade.
  • Students will need to be able to answer word problems using any method they prefer (standard algorithm, "friendly division", partial quotients, area models, etc). Estimation may be required.
  • Students will need to be able to correctly match a decimal division equation to its matching area model or hundredths grid model.

This video shows how to make a model of a decimal division equation using Hundredths Grids. In testing, students will be asked to look at an existing model and match it to the matching equation.

Dividing a Decimal by a whole number using the standard algorithm.

This is a quick video that shows what many students were taught in 4th grade - "friendly division" or partial quotients. It is an alternative to the standard algorithm that some students prefer. It can be used for whole number division, too.
