Curriculum, Grading Policy, Math Progression through Middle School and HS

Our curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills and arranged in a systematic order by the Aligned Round Rock ISD Curriculum. We are very proud to use the IIM Independent Investigation Method for our research. Our school library offers a parent's guide to IIM Research. Our focus is on differentiating education as much as possible so each student is assessed and given rigorous work based on his/her performance/knowledge level. This includes tiered learning, utilizing student choice menus, leveled assignments, pre-and post testing units of study as needed, project based learning, and more. We explore topics with greater depth and complexity to add to each students education and understanding of concepts.

Third Grade, Fourth Grade, Fifth Grade

Students earn numerical grades on a 0-100 scale. Test grades are weighted at 30% of the student's grade and daily grades make up 70% of student's grade.

Redo/Retake

Any grade below a 70 is considered failing, and the student will have a reasonable and fair opportunity to be retaught and to redo the assignment to further develop his/her understanding of the concept.

Number of Grades per Quarter

District Policy (EIA Local) states that grading guidelines shall ensure that grades reflect a student’s relative mastery of an assignment and that a sufficient number of grades are taken to support the grade average assigned. Elementary teachers will take a minimum of seven grades each quarter in each core content area (reading, writing, math, science, social studies). When calculating a nine-week average for a content area, no single grade will count more than 30% of the total average. No two grades will count more than 50% of the total average.

5th Grade TAG Math Skills

This document provides information about what your child will learn during their time in fifth grade in TAG math. This guide is based on the most recent Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for math, which have been adopted by the Texas State Board of Education. If your child is meeting the expectations outlined in these standards, he or she will have a strong foundation leading into sixth grade.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills are important because they help ensure that all students, no matter where they live in the state, are prepared for success in college and the workforce. Standards provide an important first step — a clear roadmap for learning for teachers, parents, and students. Having clearly defined goals helps families and teachers work together to ensure that students succeed. They also will help your child develop critical thinking skills that will prepare him or her for college and career.

TAG Math is an accelerated program, meaning that students will work through more than one grade level of math each year. For 5th grade, this means that students will work through the 5th grade skills not covered in 4th grade math first, then move through most of 6th grade math and part of 7th grade math.

5th Grade Skills and Understandings:

  • Solve story problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators (for example, 21/4 – 11/3)

  • Solve story problems involving multiplication and division of fractions in specific cases (multiplying a whole number by a fraction or mixed number; dividing a whole number by a unit fraction; dividing a unit fraction by a whole number)

  • Solve story problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimal numbers

  • Multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers (for example, multiplying 638×75 and dividing 6,971÷63)

  • Understand the concept of volume, and solve story problems that involve volume of rectangular prisms

  • Represent and solve story problems involving all four operations with whole numbers using diagrams and equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity

  • Use the order of operations to simplify numerical expressions

  • Graph points in the coordinate plane to solve problems and analyze patterns

  • Generalize their understanding of 2-D shapes to create hierarchies representing relationships between types of shapes

  • Convert measurements within the same measurement system (for example, convert 18 inches to 112 feet)

  • Solve one- and two-step problems using data from a frequency table, dot plot, bar graph, stem-and-leaf plot, or scatterplot

5th Grade Key Questions for Parents:

  • How is my child adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with fractions and decimals (and solving related story problems)?

  • Are they able to represent problems with equations and a letter standing for the unknown quantity?

  • How can I help them work on solving measurement problems involving perimeter, area, and volume?

6th Grade Skills and Understandings:

  • Equivalent representations and uses of numbers.

  • Locating and ordering rational numbers.

  • Operations and applications of integers and positive rational numbers.

  • Understanding and applying ratios, rates, and percents.

  • Generating equivalent math expressions.

  • Representing multiplicative and additive relationships.

  • Converting measurements within metric and customary systems.

  • Representing, solving, and graphing one-step equations and inequalities.

  • Applying understanding of sides and angles of polygons.

  • Modeling, connecting, and solving geometric equations for area and volume.

  • Represent numeric data graphically

  • Describe the center, spread, and shape of the data distribution

  • Personal financial literacy

6th Grade Key Questions for Parents:

  • How is my child analyzing and solving problems using concepts of ratio and rate?

  • Are they working with variables & expressions to represent equivalent forms?

  • Are they analyzing and solving word problems using algebraic and geometric real world situations?

7th Grade Skills and Understandings:

  • Extending rational number concepts and operations.

  • Representing, solving, and graphing two-step equations and inequalities.

  • Solving problems using proportions.

  • Representing constant rates of change and linear relationships.

  • Modeling and solving for the measurements of circles and composite figures.

  • Using and comparing statistical data to make decisions.

  • Using rational numbers in problem situations.

7th Grade Key Questions for Parents:

  • Is my child analyzing proportional relationships?

  • Are they solving real world situations using operations involving positive and negative rational numbers?

  • How is my child representing and solving equations and inequalities accurately?
