LESSON 1
Focus - Safety in Workshop
Safe use of tools and equipment
Go through Fire Drill, Earthquake Drill and Lockdown Drill.
Discuss Routines and Expectations in workshop SAFETY
(‘Expectations as decided by students’ on workshop walls)
Introduce the ‘Workshop Tools and Machine Guides” and wall charts for machine use - share with students
Teacher Introduces Scroll Saws, Bench Drill, files and Battery drills. Demonstrates how to use them safely
Students have a go at making Lettered Key tags using different thickness wood
Students only allowed to use Electric Sander when Teacher is Supervising its use
Introduce the ‘How can I do That Guides’ and share with students. And uses the guide to demonstrate How to Join wood together using Glue, Drills and Nails
Introduce to the Students the Problems they will be solving
DESIGN ENGINEERING
Your job is to Solve a Real World Problem. You will be working individually or in pairs
and can choose one of the problems below. If you want to come up with your own idea you will need to discuss it with me first
Design and create something with a Maori Theme. It could be a Myth, Legend, something which is used in Maori Culture the choice is yours.
Design and create a model of a piece of space saving furniture for a small apartment or campervan
Design and create something to store, organise or to display jewellery such as rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants and bracelets.
Design and create a tool to assist someone with a specific injury or disability eg: elderly person can't bend down to pick objects up
Design and make a device that can fire a table Tennis Ball into a bucket from 2 metres away. The device must be standing on the floor or a desk and can’t be held in your hand.
Design and create a prototype which will help exercise a pet
LESSON 2
Focus - Research
Introduce students to Design Engineering Google Site on
R.I.S Webpage
Students research their chosen problem. What exists already? What could we make or make a model of? Students add any pictures they find onto their Google Document
.
Teacher discusses Working Drawings, - What is expected, Neat and tidy, Different Views and Notes/Information
Students draw sketches and using ideas from these they start to produce working drawings
Once Drawings are completed Teacher discusses the Problem Solving Process and how it will help students
Students start to work on their projects using wall charts, user guides etc for assistance. Students follow the Problem Solving Process to solve problems.
LESSONS 3, 4
& 5
Focus -
Thinking Skills & Self Management
Soldering Demonstration - To Class. Emphasis SAFETY, Safety Glasses Fumes, Washing hands, what to do for burns. Soldering Demonstrations throughout the Term.
During lesson 4 students complete First Reflection and Tools Rubric on their Google Document using Chromebooks and Laptops. They also work on their projects
Students continue to work on their projects using wall charts, user guides etc for assistance. Students to follow the Problem Solving Process to solve problems,
Teacher to Facilitate and guide students towards being independent workers
Emphasis on high quality workmanship, managing learning, time management, perseverance, problem solving innovation and collaborative learning
Teacher spends time with students who are having difficulty, and gives more demonstrations if and when required
LESSON 6 & 7
Focus -
Problem Solving &
Time Management
Students complete a final Reflection on Google Document using Chromebooks and Laptops.
Students complete their final Rubrics. Students also complete any unfinished work on their Google Doc using Chromebooks and Laptops. They also get their peers to assess their projects
Students continue to work on their projects using wall charts, user guides etc for assistance Students to follow the Problem Solving Process to solve problems,
Teacher to Facilitate and guide students towards being independent workers
Emphasis on high quality workmanship, managing learning, time management,
perseverance, problem solving innovation and collaborative learning.
Teacher spends time with students who are having difficulty,and gives more demonstrations if and when required
