My competencies after starting TLI:
Overarching Competency #1: Interpersonal Effectiveness
I was at the developing stage with interpersonal effectiveness when I started. Now I am transforming. It was my goal to build more relationships with staff and colleagues. With the Covid-19 video, I organized and mobilized colleagues on a shared student-centered vision. I communicate with my peers and build their trust with different activities and events. I will continue to build community within the district and guide others to take up the charge.
Overarching Competency #2: Group Processes
I was was emerging when I started. Now I am developing. I now know more about leading group dynamics and navigating difficult situations while respecting the diversity of group members. I demonstrated this by taking the lead on our union bowling night and with my work on the covid-19 video. Especially with the video, I learned to manage group dynamics to produce our video.
Diversity-Equity-Cultural Competence: Collaborate Purposefully
I was at the emerging stage when I started and I am still emerging with collaborate purposefully. While I was able to collaborate purposefully with colleagues and staff from the district, I was unable to involve more students and parents. I will continue to grow in this competency. In the future I want to focus on involving students, parents, colleagues, and community members to create opportunities and activities that celebrate diverse cultures.
Association Competency: Organizing and Advocacy
Before TLI, I was at the developing stage with organizing and advocacy and now I am in the performing stage. With the Covid-19 video, I connected with others to deliver a meaningful message of hope and care to our community.
Before TLI I had been told that I am very passionate towards causes and injustice. I did not have a way to channel this passion in a professional and career-safe manner, though. With TLI I learned to value all stakeholders and their diverse background and input and solutions for issues. I also learned how to empower others to step up. If I had not done the Covid-19 video, our district staff might not have gotten the chance to show our community how much we care and miss our students. When the video was posted, I was warmed by the reaction from the community. There are comments from the video below.
I will continue to collaborate and lead others but I want to focus on my Diversity-Equity-Cultural Competence. It is my goal to attend the Indian Education meetings and to work with the Indian Ed Committee to organize events that celebrate the diverse culture of our community and students (ex. a school powwow).
The most valuable part of TLI was the collaboration and connection with fellow teachers from across the state. This program was challenging and it was comforting to know that I had nearby friends to call on for help or to bounce ideas off of.
