Teachers need to feel supported and valued. Teachers are not being taken care of. Our resources are insufficient (mental health, sense of community, teacher mentoring and collaboration) while our responsibilities are growing (be a teacher, a coach, a therapist, a caregiver, etc.). Our students, staff, and community are not able to discuss reservation issues without hurt feelings and getting defensive. Many of our Native students feel abandoned and that only teachers or school staff care (or are paid to care). There is need for community within the district as a whole. This challenge was made known through interactions with multiple stakeholders voicing frustrations and concerns about the district.
The diverse stakeholders include: Administrators, Teachers, Counselors.
Administrators- They set and carry out policies.
Teachers- They are the stakeholders addressing the problem.
Counselors- Their background and knowledge can provide more insight into the problem and possible solutions. They can also act as a bridge between administrators and teachers.
Opportunities for staff to create community must occur. Events and activities are a great start. The more we feel like we are supported and cared for, the more we can give back to our students.
In addition to building community within the school, training on social and racial issues needs to occur. We can no longer afford to talk about it outside of school and then while in school pretend that it doesn’t affect us or that it is too taboo to bring up.
Where is equity work reflected in the school culture? If equity work is not reflected how are these being affected by the lack of equity work?
My school wants to continue our push for restorative justice policies in our district. In order to take full advantage of this practice, we need to see the elements of racial and social justice that play a part. Training will benefit all staff while building community.
My intention is to broaden the existing values and vision of our school district. We currently offer many resources for students and community members (AltaCare, Adult Education, etc.) but there are not many resources for staff. If we could offer more activities and opportunities to collaborate and build community, our district would benefit.
Staff who feel like valued members of a working community will contribute ideas and time to ensure the success of their community. Thus with the more school staff who feel supported and cared for, the more we can give back to our students and community.
Group Processes and Interpersonal Effectiveness are my Overarching Competencies because I need to learn how to organize, facilitate, and lead groups. The tools learned from exploring these two competencies will help me gather other stakeholders and organize plans for change.
I will focus on Collaborate Purposefully in addressing my identified challenge. This competency is important because in order to cultivate the sense of community and support, we need to learn to work towards a common goal. This will require communication and teamwork.
I will focus on Organizing and Advocacy in addressing my identified challenge. This competency is important in that it will give me tools to connect and collaborate with various stakeholders to address issues.
I will interview and enlist help from teachers to get more buy-in from our staff. I will set up weekly morning meetings for anyone interested in coming and having breakfast and building community. I will also get input and ideas from admin and our union members.
Resources I have:
I have supportive teachers who want to help create change. I also have union members willing to assist. I have a large space that is localized that we can use for meetings.
Resources I need and how I will obtain them:
I will need time to organize and plan and interview. I need to meet with different stakeholders to gather information. I plan on utilizing a potluck in my room to get the stakeholders in a central location so I can gather information faster.
I need to send out a survey to staff to gather more input from staff on any issues. I will ask admin for permission and I will ask the union to help spread the word.
I need events and activities for staff to gather and build community. I will ask the union at a meeting what they are willing to help sponsor. I want to do a bowling night for families and see how successful that is.
An email for a potluck in my room to get staff together and allow me to collect some data from interviews. I sent this email to admin for approval and it was sent out to staff. There was a sign up sheet included in the email.
