My Plan of Action has multiple steps.
Identify the issue: There is a lack of community among staff in our district.
Gather information: I interviewed stakeholders and sent out a survey. I analyzed the results and saw that there is concern for the lack of community.
Enlist help and brainstorm: Facilitated and led meetings of staff to discuss and brainstorm for events and activities to address the lack of community. I also became more involved in the union and joined the Social Committee.
Plan and organize the events and activities to build community among staff. From the weekly morning get-togethers, we decided to do a Secret Santa in the middle school that was extremely successful. From my work with the union, we did a Bowling Night for staff. After Covid-19 hit and we had to shut down the schools, I organized and facilitated a district-wide staff lip sync video in which any staff who wanted to participate would get featured.
Overarching Competencies: Group Processes and Interpersonal Effectiveness
The plan of action connects with these chosen overarching competencies to provide more knowledge and background of how to lead, organize, and communicate with group members.
Diversity-Equity-Cultural Competence: Collaborate Purposefully
The plan of action will have more success if there are diverse perspectives contributing and supporting. The school district is a part of a culturally diverse community and we need ideas from multiple sources.
Association Competency: Organizing and Advocacy
I chose this competency so that I can build my leadership skills and learn to facilitate meaningful meetings that lead to solutions on issues.
I am building support among the teachers and administration. From weekly morning get-togethers to union meetings to the School Improvement Meeting in the Middle School, we gather ideas and information. We hear each other's concerns and make solutions. One of the major projects we focused on was the Ronan Middle School Pride Week. We wanted to showcase the community and honor and represent Native cultures.
Using the interviews from teachers, counselors, and administration, I made a school improvement survey to gather more input and have the statistics in one place. I plan on sharing the results with the School Improvement Committee and the union. After the results are shared, we will brainstorm on ideas to bring staff in the district together.
I can imagine that not everyone will want to hear, "there is a need for more community among the district staff," so instead of approaching people with the problem, I want to offer solutions and ideas. I plan on hearing all the stakeholders out and asking if they have solutions.
The intended outcomes for my action plan are to communicate with admin and staff on our needs for the school, to gather evidence to show stakeholders, to collaborate and brainstorm with colleagues on solutions to issues, and to have organize and facilitate events and activities that build relationships within the district. Evidence that supports my action plan includes: emails, pictures of the events, survey results, notes taken during meetings.
Survey comment: “Please explain or identify any issues you would like to see improve.”
There seems to be fewer and fewer who take part in the runnings of the school. Professionalism is lacking and time to get together to enjoy each other as friends is difficult. This would improve the school environment nicely. Also, I'd love to see more parents and families involved in their child's education.
There is not a sense of community with the staff. We are all scattered and then do not come together to check in on one another.
I believe our school district needs to improve on building a stronger community. If administrators want to encourage teachers to build relationships with students and families, administrators need to do vice verse. As an educator, you can think of the top-down model and if your seeing leaders working towards the goal, it's like a ripple effect. And once those social, emotional, and academic needs are met, the classroom changes and helps the teachers as a whole. Which creates a stronger learning environment within the school:)
