Discovering the history of Potowomut, Warwick, Rhode Island with specific focus on property known as "Hopelands"
Researched and Created by Charles Laurent, RHCD Teacher
Hopelands Estate Entrance, ca 1900
The Potowomut Peninsula, surrounded by Narragansett and Greenwich Bays, has an historic past that dates back 1000’s of years and includes the Narragansett Tribe, the early English settlers of the Colony of Rhode Island and the influential Brown, Ives and Goddard Families of Rhode Island.
This website serves as depository for all of the information I have discovered while researching this significant historical location. In its present iteration, Potowomut is known for its beautiful water access to the bay, Goddard Park, Potowomut Country Club, Birthplace of Nathaniel Greene and Rocky Hill Country Day School. As a teacher at Rocky Hill, my research has focused primarily on the land owned by the Greene, Brown, Ives and Goddard Families and their descendants, known as "Hopelands."
It is my goal to preserve this history in a digital format in order to ensure that is not lost to time. Since I am not a formally trained historian, I welcome any questions, criticisms or recommendations. My goal is to be as historically factual as possible, so new/different information is always appreciated.
