Our division leadership wanted us to draw an extra focus to the 5 C's of learning, especially in a regard to our student learning goals. For a math discipline, my co-workers and I needed to find a new way to assess students besides standardized, numerical scores. We wanted to find ways to incorporate the projects we already used in our curriculum and to demonstrate and document their creativity, communication, and collaboration in an authentic way.
After collaborating with my co-teacher and an ITRT, we decided to try using Google Sites for digital student portfolios. We decided to use subjective and objective measurement tools throughout the school year. It began with students completing a Google Form self-assessment about their own communicative, collaborative, creative, and mathematical skill levels. Then during each unit, students completed a project requiring them to practice and strengthen each skill and provide evidence with continued reflection. At the end of the year, the students resubmitted their self-assessment to showcase their learning throughout the course.
