Spring 2022 Collaboration with RES Students

RES & RCHS Coding & Robotics Collaboration

On Thursday, April 21st, senior library practicum students at RCHS collaborated with 4th and 5th graders at Roundstone Elementary School. The collaboration was a partnership established by two of our district’s librarians, Mrs. Cynthia Rogers (RES) and Ms. Joanie Alexander (RCHS). Both library media specialists have been working to incorporate more technology and coding into their library media centers. Through coding, students are introduced to computer science. Computational thinking helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. By beginning work with coding and computer science early, students are developing a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

Through this partnership, library practicum students worked together to create their own lesson for RES students using Ozobots, small robots that move on a path from one location to another by reading lines and colors. The tiny robots are a great way to teach students how to program and to introduce what coding is and how it works. Twelve RCHS Library Practicum students traveled to RES to instruct their lessons. Many RES students were were introduced to coding for the very first time through the use of Ozobots.  Students participated in fun lessons where they coded mazes using codes, drew constellations, and raced their Ozobots to the finish line. These lessons and activities were engaging and exciting while also helping students make connections to the real world.

We are so thankful to be able to work together across schools in our district to provide fun learning opportunities for our students!

Senior Library Students Collaborate with RES Second Graders for Coding Instruction!

On Wednesday, April 28th, senior library practicum students at RCHS collaborated with 2ndgraders at Roundstone Elementary School. The collaboration was a partnership established by two of our district’s librarians, Mrs. Cynthia Rogers (RES) and Ms. Joanie Alexander (RCMS).

Two RCHS students, Alexa Bussell and Laurel Yates, were able instruct their lesson in-person at RES, while the rest of the class taught virtually, via Google Meet, from the RCHS Library. RES 2nd graders were introduced to coding for the first time through the use of Ozobots and participated in a fun lesson where they raced their Ozobots to the finish line using color codes.

We are so thankful to be able to work together across schools in our district to provide fun learning opportunities for our students!

Rock Reads

"Rock Reads" is a project started by RCHS Library Practicum Students. "Rock Reads" are flyers created by senior library students that advertise and showcase various genres of books that are available for checkout in the RCHS LMC. Flyers will be hung in all restrooms throughout RCHS beginning in September. Flyers will be changed bi-monthly.

Spring into Reading

Spring into Reading is an annual event hosted by the RCHS LMC every spring. Various community members and RCS Staff serve as guest group discussion leaders for an assortment of books and novels read by RCHS Students. The event has also featured various famous (& local) authors as guest speakers! Spring into Reading will hopefully be scheduled for the Spring of 2022!
