Meet The Art Teacher

Hello Everyone!

My name is Mrs. O'Brien and I've been teaching  ART here at Midland for over 20 years.  I teach all the students in kindergarten up through the 8th grade.  I'm originally from Garfield and when I was 13, my parents moved to Pennsylvania.  After graduating from Indiana University of PA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, I went on to receive my teaching certification for K-12 in art as well as an elementary classroom K-5 certification.  For several years I was involved with the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts and Summer Happening which are state awarded scholarship programs for gifted and talented high school students in Pennsylvania.  During my tenure here at Midland, I continued my own education and completed a Masters Degree in Education Leadership at Felician University.

My involvement in art education extends well outside the classroom.  For many years I served on the board of directors for the Art Educators of New Jersey (AENJ), chaired the student art exhibits at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark as well as Youth Art Month for Bergen County, and also served on committees for other art programs/exhibits for students in the surrounding area such as the Bergen County Teen Arts Festival (held at Bergen County Community College).  I have been honored with the New Jersey Middle School Art Teacher State Award, the Anthony A. Guadadiello Award for outstanding contribution and service for art educators, the New Jersey Governor's Award in Arts Education, the Bergen County Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Teacher Fellowship Award, and Midland School's Teacher of the Year Award.
