Glossary
Presto - very fast
Allegro/ Vivace - Lively, brisk, rapid.
Allegretto - Moderately fast, slower than allegro.
Moderato - At a moderate speed.
Andante - Walking pace.
Adagio/ Lento - Slowly, leisurely.
Accelerando - Gradually increasing the speed.
Ritardando/ Rallentando - Slowing down.
Rubato
A ‘freer’ approach to the tempo; the performer gives an expressive interpretation of the music – not sticking strictly to time, but without altering the overall pace.
Pause
A pause sign is a symbol which means that the note should be held longer than the original value.
Time signature
Top number: how many beats in a bar
Bottom number: the type of beat

Simple time signature - The pulse is divided into 2 inner beats.

Compound time signature - The pulse is divided into 3 inner beats.
