Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful, fun-filled fortnight at Roselands and we haven't let the wet weather dampen our spirits! While the clouds may have been grey, the atmosphere inside our classrooms has been anything but. It has been a joy to see the children arriving each morning with such energy and a readiness to learn, regardless of the rain.
It has been an action-packed fortnight! We’ve seen everything from the excitement of school trips and hard-fought football match wins to the warmth of our community coffee morning and the magic of our bedtime stories. This is a testament to our staff’s dedication to keeping our pupils inspired and engaged in every aspect of school life.
I also wanted to ensure that I have officially welcomed our new staff to school. This term, Mrs Delucchi has joined us in the front office, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Shergold have joined us as mealtime assistants and Mrs Round has just been appointed to join our cleaning team. We also have Mrs Whinn joining us on her final teaching placement in Opal class. It is great to have them all joining the Roselands Family. I would also like to share the news that Mr Baldwin has officially stepped down from his role as a School Governor. On behalf of the entire school community, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Baldwin for his valuable contributions and dedicated service over the years. His commitment to supporting our school’s vision and ensuring the best outcomes for our children has been greatly appreciated by staff and fellow governors alike.
I hope that you enjoy reading about our recent highlights and seeing the photos of our children in action in this jam-packed newsletter! Thank you for your continued support.
Mrs Pippa Bastock
As you know, we have moved over to CaterLink this year. They want to hear from our pupils! Please help your child complete this quick survey so we can make our lunchtimes even better. The survey closes on 27th March.
Last week in assembly, we officially launched 'The Roselands Way.' Developed over the last term, this initiative focuses on explicitly teaching the children our expectations for different aspects of school life, ensuring everyone feels successful and supported.
Our first focus has been the 'Roselands Welcome.' We have been considering how we enter school - greeting the adults at the gates and doors and hanging our coats and bags tidily on our pegs. It has been an absolute pleasure to see the children working so hard to demonstrate this over the past two weeks. While we are still perfecting those tidy coat pegs, the children are doing a brilliant job of living out our school rules: Be Ready, Be Respectful, and Be Safe.
Looking ahead, next week’s focus will be on 'Legendary Lines.' We will be thinking in more detail about what makes a super line and how moving around the school quickly and sensibly helps us get straight back to our learning.
It was wonderful to welcome our community back into Roselands this week for our much-loved coffee morning. With a theme of board games, the hall was filled with laughter and friendly competition! It was heartwarming to see the generations coming together, as our children shared snacks and games with our lovely local community. These moments truly highlight the strength of our school family. Thank you to Mrs Chapman for organising this! The dates for our upcoming coffee morning are on the poster if you fancy joining us! Feel free to share this with others in the community too - we are always happy to welcome new faces.
A huge congratulations to our football teams for an excellent set of results this week.
The girls team continued their great form with two league wins, edging Curledge Street 1–0 thanks to a decisive goal from Ella, before securing a convincing 4–1 victory over Preston with Melody and Lexi each scoring twice.
The Year 5 and 6 boys also had a fantastic evening, winning all three of their matches against Sacred Heart, Preston and Marldon. Both teams showed real determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout, making it a brilliant all-round effort to be proud of.
Our Year 6 children also ventured out this fortnight, visiting the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter. It was an excellent day of discovery, with the children exploring the museum's fascinating collections and engaging in hands-on activities that truly brought their classroom learning to life. It was a pleasure to see them representing Roselands so well while expanding their horizons in such an inspiring setting.
Last week, Year 1 and Year 2 set off on a 'roaring' adventure at Paignton Zoo! It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to bring their learning to life as they explored various habitats and discovered fascinating facts about the animals. We were incredibly lucky that the weather stayed dry, providing the perfect conditions for a full day of trekking and discovery. A huge thank you to the volunteers who joined us; your support is invaluable in making these out-of-school experiences possible for our children.
This week, Ruby class took their energy and enthusiasm on the road to Paignton Academy for an exciting Handball Sports Festival. They represented the school so well, demonstrating fantastic teamwork and resilience throughout the afternoon. From learning new drills to competing in inter-class matches, the progress they made was a joy to see. A huge well done to everyone in Ruby class for their brilliant participation and sporting spirit!
A real highlight of the last fortnight was our annual Bedtime Stories event. It was a truly magical evening; the school felt transformed as children returned in their pyjamas, clutching their favourite soft toys, ready to get lost in a story. Our staff shared some wonderful tales, creating a calm and cosy atmosphere throughout the building. Of course, no bedtime story is complete without treats, and we are very grateful to the PSA for providing delicious hot chocolate and biscuits. It was a perfect celebration of reading for pleasure and a memory I am sure the children will cherish.
What a brilliant Year 3 and 4 Insite session we had last week! It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers 'onsite' to gain an 'insight' into our Geography learning.
After our grown-ups finished helping with the construction and headed home, the real "lava" fun began! Then in the afternoon, our playground turned into a volcanic zone as the children erupted their creations to see their Geography unit in action.
Our children have officially joined the 'Stories Under the Slates' project. Some of our Roselands Reps have decorated our very own slate to help restore one of Europe’s oldest cinemas. This isn't just an art project - this slate will be installed directly onto the auditorium roof, where it will stay to protect the building for the next 100 years! It is amazing to think that the children’s handiwork will be a permanent part of Paignton’s skyline for generations to come. ✍️🎞️
When the Picture House reopens, there will be a permanent photo book on display featuring all the slates - including ours - so we can always look back on the part we played in saving this local treasure. 📸🍿
Well done to all the children involved in making this look so fantastic. 👏 Thank you to Mrs Chapman for organising this opportunity for us!
A huge well done to Louie who represented his swimming club in the Devon County Championship in Plymouth recently. He received a personal best in butterfly against 11 year olds (he is 9) and came 2nd in his heat! 🥈
We love hearing about the children's successes out of school as well so please feel free to send in anything that you want celebrating in our school newsletter!
Each fortnight, we shine a light on class attendance to celebrate and encourage everyone to aim high! Check out how each class is doing and let’s keep up the effort. Every day counts - let’s aim for everybody to be an attendance hero!
Please ensure that all absences are reported directly to the office, rather than directly to teachers via seesaw.
A huge well done to Amethyst with 99%, Aquamarine with 98% and Opal with 97%! Incredible attendance this week!
Torbay Council have shared a message regarding the popular Autism Clubs offered by Play Torbay;
We're funding Play Torbay to run the provision until the end of 2026.
ASRUS in Brixham and Mayfield School in Torquay will run two evening clubs aimed at children with autism.
Indigos Forest School in Brixham will host sessions on Wednesday mornings for young people who are electively home educated.
The schemes were running last year but ended when Play Torbay faced a funding shortfall.
The ASRUS and Mayfield sessions offer weekly outdoor play sessions tailored to the sensory and social needs of neurodiverse children. Activities include music, sports and crafts.
At Indigos, youngsters get a forest school curriculum under the guidance of a skilled forest school practitioner.
Please note that the House Days have been updated!
