It is mandatory for students to submit a written reflection together with their extended essay on the Reflections of Planning and Progress Form (RPPF). The purpose of the reflections is to demonstrate the student's engagement with the research process and topic, as well as their growth as a learner. The RPPF includes three short reflections of no more than 500 words total. Each reflection is based on a conversation between the student and the advisor. The score for criterion E (engagement) is based on the RPPF.
The initial reflection session occurs after the student submitted a research proposal to the advisor at the end of the first semester of 11th grade.
The interrim reflection session occurs after the studnt submitted the first full draft to the advisor at the end of junior year.
The final reflection session (viva voce) occurs after the extended essay has been submitted at the end of the first semester of 12th grade.
What should students demonstrate in their RPPF?
Ongoing engagement and enthusiams for the topic
Decision-making process
Conceptual understanding
Skill development
Problem-solving strategies and process
Personal growth and development
Ties to the IB learner profile
Not all of these aspects need to be emphasized in every one of the three reflections. Students can set a different focus for each reflection.
