One of the most important aspects of an education is to prepare students for participation in American constitutional democracy. This includes, but is not limited to informed voting, civic knowledge and skills, and civic action. Students have multiple opportunities in a variety of classes to implement the knowledge and practice the skills that are essential to the health of our democratic republic.

The last two weeks of September are High School Voter Education Weeks. Students 16 years old and up are able to preregister to vote. Riverside high schools host voter preregistration drives and provide lessons on the importance of informed voting. The RUSD Civics Showcase features student civic engagement projects. RUSD features one of the largest civic project displays in the nation! Visit us at the Riverside Convention Center on April 22, 2025!
Students who complete a civic engagement project that takes action on a social, political, economic, or environmental issue during high school may earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement. This award is attached to a student's diploma and represents high quality civic action. Students whose projects are especially unique may earn a Social Innovation scholarship as well.
