Mr. Garrett is the band and general music teacher for Hawthorne and Madison Elementary Schools.
A graduate of California State University, Long Beach, Mr. Garrett majored in instrumental music education and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1986. Performing on tuba, Mr. Garrett was a member of the Big Brown Music Machine, the Concert and Symphonic Bands, as well as the Brass Ensemble and Wind Symphony. During his time in college, Mr. Garrett was also a member of the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, performing on contrabass bugle (1982-84). The Blue Devils were the undefeated world champions in 1982.
Upon graduation from Long Beach State, Mr. Garrett student taught at Irvine High School, where he worked with both the concert and jazz bands, as well as the orchestra. Mr. Garrett's first teaching assignment was at Ramona High School in Riverside, and then taught in Pomona Unified at Pomona High and Simons Middle School. During his tenure at Simons, Mr. Garrett's band and orchestra received both Superior and Excellent ratings at district and regional Southern California Schools Band and Orchestra Association band and orchestra festivals. It was also during this time that Mr. Garrett earned his Master of Education Degree from Chapman University, as well as his administrative credential. In 2013, Mr. Garrett returned to Riverside Unified to assume the role of an elementary band and strings teacher.
In his free time, Mr. Garrett plays the euphonium with the Pomona College Band, as well at many TubaChristmas events in Southern California. Mr. Garrett is also a parade and band/orchestra festival adjudicator for S.C.S.B.O.A.
