SOCIAL STUDIES APP-SMASH
By Mrs. Chatterton's class Rivera Elementary
When faced with the challenge of leaving your green screen behind, the key is to improvise. In a moment of quick thinking, I decided to implement an App Smash activity with my students. Here's how it unfolded:
I began by teaching students how to create a green screen background using Canva and then capturing their image with an iPad to be placed in the Green Screen App. The next step was for students to select a setting from Chapter 3 of their Social Studies text and search for an image of that setting on Google.
After finding the appropriate image, students uploaded it to the Green Screen App along with their green screen photo from Canva. They were then tasked with writing a brief blurb or fact related to their Chapter 3 social studies text. Since this activity involved app smashing, students utilized the mask feature in the Green Screen App to remove the background of their photo.
Finally, students downloaded the final product of their composition. This hands-on activity proved to be incredibly engaging and enjoyable for the students, allowing them to apply their learning in a creative and tech-savvy way.
END OF THE YEAR POETRY
By Mrs. Childress's class Taft Elementary
We discussed different types of poetry and how poetry is used to express emotions.
Students were given a prompt to write a poem about 5th grade. The standard addressed was RL.5.10
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
With the use of Canva, on the Ipad, students were able to type their poems and add creative touches such as images that corresponded with their message. Students who never complete assignments were engaged and completed their best writing piece yet.
MOON PHASES
By Mrs. Childress's class Taft Elementary
The 5th grade students completed the lesson: Why does the Moon change shape? The students learned about the phases of the moon per the grade level standards 5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Via the hands-on lesson students used a styrofoam ball as a model of the Moon and a flashlight as a model of the Sun to gain a better understanding of how the interactions between the Sun and Moon are responsible for the Moon’s phases. With the inclusion of the ipads, students could go back and see the work completed with their partners and use lesson specific vocabulary to explain their learning.
