OKAY!
One thing I strive to do is to do is maintain an environment where it is okay to make mistakes.
When planning and teaching lessons, mistakes happen. Lesson plans need to be adjusted, sometimes I write the wrong thing down, and sometimes students make mistakes.
Sometimes during a lesson I say or write the wrong thing and either realized it in the middle of it or a student points it out. I use these times as an opportunity to remind my students that everyone makes mistakes - even their teacher.
Overall, I want my students to feel safe making mistakes in their learning and know that I am there to help them along the way so that they are able to recognize and fix those mistakes.
Every moment is an opportunity to add to the story that is our life.
When I am happy, sad, excited, nervous - I write. I have found this to be therapeutic at times, and I encourage my students to write. When they have something to share, or something on their mind that they do not want to share, or any chance arises, I tell them to write. In this moment I tell them not to worry about spelling or grammar, just write what they are thinking, get it on paper however they know how. This could be a story, a letter, or a quick note. It has come to the point where my students will ask me if they could take a break to write. I almost always say yes.
The one thing I tell them is that every day we are writing our own stories, but we can only control what we do, not what others do. Every time we make a new friend, learn something new, or do something, we are adding to our story. I have used this to talk about classroom behavior, bullying, friendship quarrels, and many other things.
But, whether it be fiction or fact, I will always encourage my students to write their story and be mindful of what is written.
