Week 2 (December 8 - 12):
The new trimester is under way, and sixth grade students have moved on to a new topic, the Atmosphere and Weather. In Week 1, sixth grade students began exploring the difference between weather and climate, and learning about the composition and layers of the atmosphere. In Week 2 they will explore the concept of pressure, and apply it as they learn about how air pressure affects the condition of the atmosphere, begin exploring other factors that affect weather such as temperature and humidity. Most of our work in this early part of the trimester is group and class work; there are no significant assessments or projects until we return from Winter Break, with the exception of a partner quiz on December 18, which students will complete with access to notes.
Sixth Graders will also be returning to the topic of salmon as we send off our classroom salmon fry with our Kinder partners on Tuesday, December 16. More details about this field trip will be emailed home early in Week 2.
Upcoming Dates and Assessments to Note
Salmon Release Field Trip- Tuesday, December 16 (9:15 - 10:45, George Rogers Park)
Partner Quiz on December 18 (covering weather vs climate, layers of the atmosphere, pressure, air pressure, and temperature)
Science 6 is a Sixth Grade NGSS-based course, splitting the year into three focal areas of science: earth science, physical science, and life science. During the earth science exploration, students will explore the ways in which the earth recycles, studying the water cycle and taking a side track to learn about watersheds, rivers, and salmon. Sixth graders will raise and release salmon in the late fall. In the winter, sixth graders will learn about heat and energy transfer, and the spring will bring a deep exploration into ecosystems and species diversity in preparation for the 6th Grade Field Studies, Outdoor School.
Grading information can be found on the "5/6 Science Program Overview" page. Please review to understand how students will be evaluated this year.
