Beginning Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion

Summer Music Academy is the perfect place to start learning a new instrument. Our excellent beginners program starts at “opening the case” and takes students through most of their first year of study… in just 4 weeks!! 

This summer, beginning lessons are available on the following instruments: 

Woodwinds: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone

Brass: trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone horn, tuba

Percussion: snare drum and mallet instruments (preparing for school band)

Drum Set: drums (preparing for a rock or jazz band)

Unlock the rhythmic potential within you with our exhilarating Bucket Drumming ensemble class! Discover the captivating world of percussion using everyday items like buckets, drumsticks, and your own creativity. Led by our experienced percussion instructor, this class is perfect for beginner and seasoned drummers, as well as ANY instrumentalist! All you need is a sense of rhythm, a willingness to learn, and a bucketload of enthusiasm. Join us and unleash your rhythmic creativity today!

Beginning Drumset

Drumset I (10:35 AM): Have you always dreamed of playing the drums in a rock band? If so, your day has arrived! Beginners can enroll in Drum Set I. Students will need to bring a pair of drum sticks to participate in this class. Drum sets will be provided 

Intermediate/Advanced Strings

Small group lessons are offered for the intermediate or advanced player (grades 4-12) with at least 1 year of experience. Please contact us for additional lesson information for younger students. Lessons provide the opportunity to improve technique and overall musicianship. 

This summer, Intermediate & Advanced lessons are available on the following instruments: 

Strings: violin, viola, cello, bass

Intermediate/Advanced Group Lesson - Strings | 9:00 AM & 10:35 AM

Students with at least one-year of playing experience may enroll in an intermediate/advanced group lesson. These classes will be focused on improving the technique and musicianship of each student. 

Int/Adv Lessons Strings 8:15 AM, 9:00 AM & 10:35 AM (violin, viola, cello, bass)

***It is highly recommended that students who enroll in a intermediate/advanced group lesson ALSO enroll in the Ensemble class (9:45 AM).

Intermediate/Advanced String Ensemble

*Ensembles designed for students with at least one year of playing experience.

Drumset II: An intermediate level class designed to advance your skills as a rock band or jazz band drum set player. To enroll, students must have taken private drum set lessons, or completed the Drum Set I class.

Piano

Studying piano is very rewarding and provides a visual and kinesthetic connection to the study of scales and melodic patterns. Working together as an ensemble can enhance the learning and the experience of making music at the keyboard!

PIANO

Piano for Beginners (Gr. 1-4) 8:15 AM

Piano study offers young students an exciting introduction into the world of instrumental music! In this fun and fast moving class, students will learn basic piano skills, ear training, rhythm and note reading, through the use of group instruction, exercises and games. Students will benefit from the opportunity to play for and with each other.

Piano for Beginners (Gr. 5-8) 10:35 AM

This group class offers an opportunity for the older beginner (whether first timer or returning student) to lay a foundation for piano study. Topics include: posture and technique, rhythm, melody and harmony, sight-reading, ear-training and improvisation.

Always wanted to play the piano? Now’s your chance! Adult Beginning Piano is a fun and relaxed introduction to the basics of piano playing—no prior experience required! In this supportive group setting, you’ll learn essential skills like note reading, simple chords, and playing familiar melodies. Whether you’re a total beginner or picking up where you left off years ago, this class will help you gain confidence at the keys while making music in a stress-free, encouraging environment. Come discover the joy of playing piano this summer! 

Guitar

Small group guitar lessons are offered for the beginning, intermediate or advanced player (grades 4-12). Lessons provide the opportunity to improve technique and overall musicianship. 

Ukulele | 8:15 AM - *New*

An introductory class in learning how to play the ukulele! Learn chords, songs, and be ready to perform as you begin your journey of learning the ukulele.

Guitar Group Lessons

Beginning Guitar: No experience necessary! Program offers a 40 minute lesson and/or a 40 minute ensemble every weekday. It is recommended that students enroll in both classes. Students will need to bring their own instrument.

Beginning Guitar Lesson 9:00 AM

Intermediate/Advanced Guitar: Open to all intermediate and advanced level players. Lesson groups will be assigned on a “skill level” appropriate basis. Program offers a 40 minute lesson and/or a 40 minute ensemble every weekday. It is recommended that students enroll in both classes.

Always dreamed of playing guitar? Adult Beginning Guitar is the perfect place to start! In this welcoming and relaxed class, you’ll learn fundamental chords, strumming patterns, and easy songs to get you playing right away. No prior experience or music reading is required—just bring your guitar and a willingness to learn! Whether you want to strum along to your favorite tunes or build a solid foundation for future playing, this class will give you the skills and confidence to start your musical journey. Join us and make this the summer you learn guitar! 

Jazz Bands

Jazz Ensembles are offered in an enjoyable, stimulating, non-competitive setting with the purpose of developing listening and group performance skills, and self-esteem. For grades 4-12.

Jazz Bands

Junior Jazz Band 10:35 AM (all band/orchestra instruments, piano, electric guitar, and drum set)

Senior Jazz Band 10:35 AM (all band/orchestra instruments, piano, electric guitar, and drum set)

***It is recommended that Jazz Band members ALSO enroll in our Jazz Improvisation elective class!

Improvisation | 11:20 AM

This class is highly recommended for all jazz band students. Students will learn how to create improvised solos, utilizing various chords and rhythms as well as major, minor and blues scales. These techniques can be applied to solo playing in the jazz bands. 

Electives

Our elective classes are a great way to round out your musical knowledge, or to sharpen your skills in the art studio. ANYONE can take these classes, no matter the instrument and no matter your skill/experience level!

Studio Art | 8:15 AM, 9:00 AM, 9:45 AM, 10:35 AM, 11:20 AM 

Do you like to draw, paint, or just create? Whatever medium you prefer, this course will teach you the design elements and principles needed to create a work of art and explore your artistic inspirations. You’ll travel back in time and across the world to look at art from different cultures, and learn about the art of critiquing. Let’s turn your creative dreams into reality! All levels of student are welcome. Each class will be designed to fit each individual student's interests! An additional $25 will be charged as a Supply Fee for this course.

Ukulele | 8:15 AM  *New*

Bucket Drumming | 9:45 AM

Music Theory & Composition | 10:35 AM

An introductory/intermediate level study of basic musical principles, leading to the creation of original compositions. Topics covered include learning the rudiments of scales, intervals, melody, harmony, chord progressions, and musical form.

Improvisation | 11:20 AM

This class is highly recommended for all jazz band students. Students will learn how to create improvised solos, utilizing various chords and rhythms as well as major, minor and blues scales. These techniques can be applied to solo playing in the jazz bands. 

Songwriting | 9:00 AM & 11:20 AM

Learn how a song is made from start to finish, exploring topics such as lyric writing techniques, “what makes a strong melody,” building a chord progression, and composing a bassline. Analyze songs by successful artists to learn about writing a hook, song structure, and arrangement. 

Private Lessons

This summer is the perfect time to learn a new instrument, or increase technical and musicianship skills on your current instrument in a one-on-one setting. Private lessons offer a unique opportunity to address each student’s areas of interest and development! All of our instructors are professional musicians who are also outstanding educators!

Private 30 minute lessons are now available for all instruments at the rate of $50 per lesson. Private lessons will be offered in person this summer.

Private lessons are offered during the hours of the Summer Music Academy (8:15-12 noon), according to each teacher's availability.
