The Challenge: Students reviewed the engineering design process and were presented with Jessi's Problem (SciShow Kids). Students brainstormed how they could solve the problem, and plan out their designs. Students only were able to use certain materials, as they were the only things that Jessi could find around her treehouse. Students came up with the idea to build Jessi a backscratcher. The only materials they were allowed to use were: a ruler, a paper towel roll, a pencil, a fork, modeling clay, and tape.

The Challenge: Students were given 24 cups, and were tasked to create the tallest tower that they could. This activity promoted critical thinking, teamwork, and having a growth mindset as sometimes their tower would fall over! Students knew that all they needed to do was try again! Students connected the challenge to the engineering design process, which is one of the central ideas of STEAM that is covered throughout the year.
