5-10-24
Straw Rockets
Today students were rocket scientists! They designed and tested straw rockets to see whose could fly the highest!
4-23-24
Strong Shapes Challenge
Students are challenged to experiment with folding paper in ways to test it’s strength. Which is stronger? Triangle, Circle or Square?
4-16-24
Parachutes
Today students designed a parachute from scratch to have the longest hang time. Students used the EDP to design a parachute out of everyday items. We tested their designs on the playground.
12-13-23
Gingerbread Houses
Today students designed and decorated their own gingerbread houses with milk cartons, graham crackers, frosting, and all sorts of candies.
11-29-23
Catapults
Today, students learned about simple machines. They built a catapult and launched items.
October 9th & 18th
Pumpkin Drop
Students worked on their Pumpkin protection devices (PPD) for 2 weeks. They used the Engineering Design Process to complete their box.
10-02-23
Perfect Packaging
Today students observed the properties of different materials, then they created packaging to protect crackers from a fall.
9-8-23
The Tallest Tower
Today the students had a design challenge to build as a team, the tallest tower out of playdough and toothpicks. After their initial build, they were able to view other team's designs and re-work their own design.
8-31-23
Paper Chain Challenge
Today students were challenged with making the longest paper chain with limited supplies and time.
8-24-23
I Can Do Hard Things
Today students learned about growth mindsets by participating in a challenge to move their fuzzy friend from one spot to another without using their hands!
4-27-23
Mirror, Mirror!!
Today we explored more with mirrors as we worked through challenges to move light beams from a flashlight around objects and in different directions.
4-19-23
How Does Light Travel?
Today we explored how light travels! We went outside and experimented with mirrors. We were able to see behind us and we were able to direct sunlight onto objects.
3-23-23 Owl Pellets
Today we learned about how and what owls eat. We learned that they swallow their prey whole and cough up what they can not digest as owl pellets. We dissected owl pellets which are composed of bits of bones, fur, and feathers.
2-23-23
Plants Structures
Today we finished our investigation of plants and their structures. We planted some of our sprouts outside and we placed some of our sprouts in a hydroponic system to see if see can get our plants to grow without soil.
2-14-23 Seed and Plant Development
Today we are continuing to explore our sprouting seeds. We are comparing different seed's structures. Some seeds are germinating faster than others. The Mung beans were the fastest, while we are still waiting for the popcorn seeds to germinate. Some seeds have already developed leaves!
2-6-23 The Sprouting Seed
Today, we learned more about seeds. Mung beans Seeds are dormant baby plants waiting for the right conditions to germinate or to grow. We put bush beans, mung beans, popcorn seeds, sunflower seeds and Laxton pea seeds in a personal sprouter. We also have a class sprouter. We will be observing these over the next 2 weeks to see what happens!
1-27-23 Seed Search
Today we explored different types of fruit and the different seeds they produce. We explored how they were different and how they were the same.
11-28-22 Solar System to scale model
Today we completed our to scale model of the solar system. We went outside and marked off the distance of the planets from the Sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars were really close the sun, compared to Saturn, Neptune and Uranus!!
11-3-22 Meteorologist Josh Knight From WACH Fox 57 visited us. He shared lots of information and cool demonstrations.
9-15-22
Today we investigated how to measure temperature accurately. We used thermometers to measure cold water, room temperature water, and hot water!
8-19-22 Today we got to use the engineering design process to make name plates to solve the problem of Mrs. Jones not knowing our names. We tested our creation and made changes to improve it!
5-16-22 Students participated in the "Sound Challenge" They tried to see if they could differentiate the sounds different items made when dropped on a table. Some were distinct and easy, while others were difficult.
4-19-22 Students investigated light with colored filters!
4-1-22 We are learning about Light! the 4th graders went outside and worked with mirrors. They discovered that mirrors can reflect light. They used the mirrors to direct the sun's light onto the ground and onto the building.
3-7-22 Owl Pellets!! We are dissecting owl pellets to discover what they eat. Owls swallow their prey whole. They regurgitate bits of fur, feathers and bones they can't digest.
1-20-22 Today, we went on a "Seed Search" We opened up different fruits and counted and compared seed shape placement and numbers.
11-4-21 We made a scale model of the solar system!!!
9-29-21 We had Josh Knight, chief meteorologist from WACH fox 57, as a guest speaker. He spoke to us about the weather, being on TV and he even made a cloud!!
9-20-21 Today, we made frost!! We explored what happens when condensation freezes!
Sound:
The Drop Challenge
We tried to use our discerning ear to guess what object was dropped.
We were introduced to a new organism 3-31-21.
Isopods or more commonly known as "Rollie Pollies" Contrary to popular belief these creatures are not insects, but crustaceans that use gills to breathe.
We are studying mealworms
Shadow tracing
Tracing our early morning shadows.
