Grades--Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question:  What is the grading scale used by Summit Parkway Middle School?
Answer:  All schools in South Carolina use what is called the Uniform Grading Scale.  The grading scale is below.  Point values used for calculating GPA's can be found here.  Only high school credit courses earn students GPA points in middle school.

A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=0-59

Question:  How are grades calculated?
Answer:

• Minor Grades 50%

• Major Grades 50%

Question:  How often are teacher grade books updated?

Answer:  Most teachers update grades in their grade book approximately every 1-2 weeks.

Question:  What are grades used for besides determining promotion to the next grade or retention in the current grade?

Answer:  Grades are used for placement in classes for the next year.  Grades can help or hinder a child's application for a magnet program.  Ultimately, grades tend to reflect what your knows.  If their grades are not good, they may not be learning everything they need to know to be as successful as they are capable of being in future classes.
