Meet your Dell Chromebook. It can do lots of things - just make sure that they are school-related when you are in class!
Your Chromebook is pretty sturdy, but you must be careful when carrying it (always while it's closed) or you will damage the hinges and/or screen. Also, you must always keep it in your case - especially when it's in your bookbag - or you will break the screen.
The RV Tech.B@r is the place to find answers to technology questions and help with Chromebook problems. It is located on the left side of the Library Commons and is easily identified by the "RV Tech.B@r" sign.
The first step is to refer to the district Chromebook Troubleshooting page - https://bit.ly/CB_Trouble. If there is no visible damage to the device, one of these steps will likely "fix" your issue.
If you are unable to solve your issue through troubleshooting, there is visible damage to your Chromebook, or you need a replacement charger, the student should complete the RV Chromebook Repair Request form - https://bit.ly/repair_request. Either Mrs. Hunter or Ms. J. Brown will contact you via email (don't forget to check your email!) about a day/time to bring your device to the Tech.B@r in the library for service.
NOTE: **The new Dell 3100 Chromebooks are very "finicky" about charging and powering on. Make sure that you never allow the battery level to get below 25%. Students should LOG OFF and SHUT DOWN their Chromebooks every day and charge them every night! You may need to gently hold in the power button for 5 or more seconds to power your Chromebook on and you may need to retry this several times. You may also try holding the power button and the “refresh” key ↩️ at the same time - this often helps get a Chromebook powered back up. Look in the Chromebook troubleshooting document for more information about power problems.
Here are some easy tips to ensure that your Chromebook stays "healthy."
#1 Rule - NEVER USER YOUR CHROMEBOOK TO CHARGE ANOTHER DEVICE (LIKE YOUR CELL PHONE)! Your Chromebook battery is not designed to be used as a USB charger - it can't handle it and eventually you will run into trouble!
Charge your Chromebook with your Richland 2 Chromebook charger at home EVERY night. NEVER allow your Chromebook to have less than a 25% charge; if you let the battery drain and it will not power on,it may take a day or two to recharge.
If someone else uses your Chromebook, delete them as a user as soon as you get your Chromebook back. Too many user profiles on your Chromebook will drain your battery.
Please do not go out and purchase a replacement charger. Replacement chargers are only $25 from the school and you get a charger designed specifically for your Dell Chromebook. Off-brand and generic chargers can and have caused fires when connected to Chromebooks!
At the end of each school day, SIGN OUT and SHUT DOWN your Chromebook. When you want to access your home or other network, wait for the WiFi to connect before signing in. Then, when you finish using WiFi, SIGN OUT and SHUT DOWN.
Don't add any apps or extensions to your Chromebook other than those that are requested by your teachers. Apps and extensions often interfere with one another, causing your Chromebook and Google Drive to do "weird" things.
Occasionally (once a month) do a manual update by clicking on the 3 dots at the upper right corner of browser; Scroll to “Settings”; Click on blue link: “About Chrome OS”; click on gray box to update the Chrome settings. (If your browser is already up-to-date, it will notify you once you do this.) You can also do a manual update by going to chrome://chrome and following the directions.
