Unit Staff Selection Process

The NJROTC Unit Staff is composed of dedicated cadet leaders who earn their positions through a rigorous four-month selection process, typically conducted from January through April. This process is designed to identify cadets who demonstrate strong character, discipline, and the ability to lead by example.

Throughout the selection period, cadets are evaluated through multiple written and practical assessments covering leadership principles, military knowledge, close-order drill, and the NJROTC Field Manual. Candidates must also successfully complete the Physical Readiness Test (PRT), demonstrating physical fitness and personal accountability.

Cadets appear before formal board convenings, during which they are assessed on military bearing, communication skills, confidence, and professionalism. As part of the board process, cadets undergo a detailed uniform inspection, ensuring they meet NJROTC grooming, wear, and appearance standards.

The selection process culminates in a challenging crucible event, designed to test cadets mentally and physically while reinforcing teamwork, resilience, and leadership under pressure.

Cadets who successfully complete the process earn the privilege of wearing their leadership pin for the upcoming school year. During the May Awards Ceremony, selected cadets officially step into their roles, are recognized with their assigned billet titles, and receive their corresponding officer ranks.

This comprehensive process ensures NJROTC Unit Staff members are fully prepared to lead, mentor, and uphold the highest standards of the unit.

The Commanding Officer is the highest-ranking cadet in the unit and is responsible for leading, guiding, and representing the corps of cadets. The CO sets the standard for discipline, professionalism, and performance within the unit. This officer ensures that the unit maintains a positive image and upholds the core values of the NJROTC program through example and leadership.

The Executive Officer serves as the second-in-command of the unit and assists the Commanding Officer. The XO maintains accountability among the staff and supports cadets in upholding discipline, readiness, and unit morale.

Operations Officer

The Operations Officer coordinates and plans all unit events, including field trips, ceremonies, and inspections. OPSO ensures that each event is well-organized and works with other departments to guarantee mission success.

Command Master Chief

The Command Master Chief serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the CO and XO. The CMC ensures good order, discipline, and morale among enlisted cadets, while also assisting with mentorship and leadership development.

The Training Officer manages the academic and drill training of cadets. Responsibilities include maintaining training schedules, organizing uniform inspections, and tracking individual and unit performance progress.

The Head Admin Officer is responsible for maintaining cadet records, attendance, and personnel files. This officer ensures all paperwork and reports are accurate and submitted on time.

The Head Supply Officer is in charge of issuing, tracking, and maintaining all uniforms, equipment, and materials. This officer ensures that all supplies are accounted for and in good condition.

Community Service Officer

The Community Service Officer is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and tracking all community service activities for the unit. This officer works with local organizations, schools, and charities to create volunteer opportunities that reflect the NJROTC values of citizenship and service. The Community Service Officer also maintains records of cadet participation and ensures all service hours are properly documented and reported.
