Work-based learning experiences offer significant value by enabling students to establish connections with business/industry representatives.
In 2018, South Carolina's accountability system incorporated work-based learning as a criterion for assessing high school report card ratings, emphasizing career readiness.
By grade 12, a student can showcase career readiness by fulfilling one of the career ready qualifiers through the successful completion of a work-based learning experience that is approved by South Carolina.
In order to ensure career readiness accountability, the approved work-based learning experiences in South Carolina include registered apprenticeships, youth apprenticeships, cooperative education programs, and internships.
Each work-based learning opportunity in career readiness allows students to gain firsthand experience in understanding workforce demands, developing employability skills, and adapting to different work environments.
Internships
An internship is a program organized by a school that allows students to work in a real workplace setting.
It helps them gain practical knowledge and skills related to their chosen career path.
An internship allows students to gain practical experience in a specific industry or occupation that aligns with their career interests, abilities, and goals.
The employee at the worksite is the student's supervisor.
The intern follows a schedule that is determined by the worksite supervisor's availability for teaching and learning, in agreement with the sponsoring school.
An internship usually lasts for a period of three to six months, which may vary based on the number of hours required to complete it.
Internships can be paid or unpaid.
Before starting an internship, the student is given the criteria and guidelines by their supervisor at the worksite.
The training agreement and evaluation plan should be kept for two years after the student finishes high school.
An internship is a qualification that prepares you for a career.
How Can I Earn a WBL Credit on My Transcript?
If the internship or work experience is relevant to the student's Individualized Graduate Plan (IGP), the student may be eligible for academic credit.
A full credit can be earned by completing 120 hours of work or service.
A half credit can be earned by completing 60 hours of work or service.
Students are expected to hand in graded assignments and earn a letter grade at the end of the semester.
Pay stubs or a timesheet must be submitted as proof of student hours worked.
Training in which certain skills are learned and put to use is an essential component of work-based learning placements (also known as employment or service opportunities).
At least twice during the WBL experience, students will be formally assessed by their supervisors.

You must be in grades 11 or 12 to participate in this program. No exceptions!
If you are interested, please proceed with the application for this program. Upon completion of your application, you can expect to receive an email from the WBLC (Work-based Learning Coordinator). It is important to note that this email will also be copied to your designated teacher or supervisor for their reference and awareness.
Attendance Policy
To be eligible for participation in the Learn, Lead, and Serve program, it is imperative to uphold a satisfactory attendance record in all of your classes. The role of the Work-based Learning Coordinator (WBLC) includes conducting regular attendance checks and reporting any students who are not adhering to the attendance policies set by the school's administration. Non-compliance with the attendance policy of the school will lead to the student's automatic dismissal from the program.
