One of the particular strengths of AVID Schoolwide Systems at our school is the intentional alignment between our school structures and the core components of the AVID program. Our master schedule reflects this commitment by offering multiple sections of AVID elective classes and ensuring students have access to a variety of rigorous academic courses. Our school mission emphasizes college and career readiness, which directly supports AVID’s goals and philosophy. We also provide strong academic support structures for all students, including the Promising Pathways Tutoring Program, which offers both in-person and online tutoring options to ensure accessibility and equity. Our staff is deeply engaged in continuous improvement, with teachers actively participating in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and ongoing professional development opportunities. A major system-wide strength is our commitment to college readiness, demonstrated by our administration of the PSAT to students, giving them early exposure to college entrance assessments. Additionally, over 75% of our staff has been AVID trained, creating a unified instructional approach and helping maintain consistency in AVID strategies across classrooms. These systems work together to create a schoolwide culture that supports student achievement, builds college readiness, and ensures all students are equipped for success beyond high school.
An area for growth is expanding college and career readiness initiatives beyond the AVID elective. While the PSAT is offered, there is an opportunity to embed more college-preparatory experiences, such as college visits, career exploration events, and financial aid workshops, across all grade levels. Additionally, while over 75% of staff is AVID trained, we can continue to grow that number and ensure that new teachers receive timely AVID onboarding and support to sustain consistent instructional practices across the campus.
To address these areas in our AVID site goals and school improvement plan, we can:
Set a goal to increase AVID elective enrollment by targeting diverse populations and implementing an inclusive recruitment process.
Develop schoolwide initiatives that expose all students—not just AVID students—to college and career readiness experiences.
Provide ongoing AVID professional development and mentoring for new staff to build capacity and strengthen fidelity of implementation.
By focusing on these goals, we can continue to build a robust AVID system that supports all students in reaching their full academic potential.
