AP AFAM is a interdisciplinary college-level course that examines the chronological progression of United States history with a strong emphasis on the contributions of African Americans, including the eras of pre-slavery, early and antebellum America, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim-Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and modern America. This course explores the social and political status of African Americans throughout history, focusing on evidence and sources (journals, speeches, pictures, artifacts, videos, etc.) Students will historical evidence by critiquing and organizing ideas, recognizing bias, and formulating hypotheses.
When Ridge View first offered African American Studies in 2017, there were two sections of the course, meaning only 60 students per school year could participate. Since, the program has grown to include ten sections, including the very first AP class. Ridge View was the first school in the state to offer the advanced-placement class, and one of about sixty in the nation.
AP African American Studies (AP AFAM) is an amazing and historical course. In fact, Ridge View gained national attention during the first year of the course's offering on CNN, the Post and Courier, CBS, and on BET and VH1 in a new television series called "America in Black."
