The Day Ma'Khia Died: Understanding How Negative Social Imagery Impacts Teaching and Learning
Dr. Dalisha Shingler
In this session, we will interrogate the stories we tell ourselves (and others) about people from historically marginalized communities. We will accomplish this by examining the questions we do (or do not) ask ourselves and examining the sources from which we glean our “credible” stories. Finally, I will share resources and ideas to receive student, family, and community stories. The purpose of this reflective work is to disrupt deficit narratives that lead to destructive practices that cause harm to our children, communities, and society.

Voice feedback includes extensions such as Mote and Read&Write for Google. Video feedback includes screen recording tools such as Screencastify. Natural handwriting feedback includes the digital handwriting feature in the Google Classroom mobile app.
Let's Go! Virtual or Not Virtual...That's the Question?
Mariel Gomez de la Torre-Cerfontaine & Maria Bossa
Participants will see how students can virtually visit six continents all without leaving their homes. This project started in March 16, 2020 when schools closed globally due to COVID. We will share how students in North Carolina, Peru & Saint Lucia were able to visit Tanzania, India, Peru, Italy, Argentina, Egypt, Croatia, Germany and Australia with a focus on building literacy skills as they travel around the world. The experiences and voices of students will be shared as well as building background knowledge of the various countries to be visited. Practical ideas and tips will be shared for others to create comparable "LIFE VIRTUAL TRIPS."
Our ESL / EFL students have benefited by developing the four skills through meaningful experiences where students can apply what they have lived by breaking down the barriers of virtuality. Students from three different countries have been able to enrich themselves and applied it in history, geography, mathematics, reading, writing, and interacting with other children from other countries. Come visit with us the world in 45 minutes! Just sit, enjoy and have fun!

Authentic Assessments: Providing Students With Digital Assessment Methods to Showcase Learning
Dr. Lauren Gehr
By providing students with choice in their learning, teachers can encourage students to become more confident and empowered learners. Empowering students is crucial for post-pandemic instruction. Student choice can also teach students to become independent learners and thinkers. The issue that many teachers have with student choice is how to get started. It can seem like a daunting task to give students choice. This session will provide teachers with easy ways to implement student choice into their pedagogy and practice. Teachers will leave the session with assessments and strategies that will empower students in their learning by simply providing choice.
