Answer: Ya, I feel like emo rap definitely appeals to a niche group of emo rappers. It definitely covers themes of mental health. I feel like there two types of people. There is one type in which people think that we shouldn't talk about these topics. However, there is this other group who feels that it is a way from how they get through their own struggles and a vehicle of dealing with how they feel. Emo-rap definitely has its place in music.
Interview with Raij (1): What got you into emo rap from the start?
Answer: My friends back in high school listened to "Death Race to Love" by Juice Wrld. I started listening to the album. I put in on and I ended up of discovering more Juice Wrld. I fell in love with it.
Interview with Raij (2): What makes you listen to Juice Wrld?
Answer: I listen to Juice Wrld because of his voice. His voice is really unique and the beats in the backdrop. The melodies and the beats are really good. Most of his stuff is melodic and I really love his good catchy beats and voice. His music really makes me feel good and I would listen in times of feeling down and sad.
Interview with Raij (3): How does listening to Juice Wrld make you feel?
Answer: I usually feel pretty good. Juice Wrld was one of the first in the industry. At least to my knowledge, not many mainstream artists at that time (2010s) were willing to get that deep. It's good. It's really good music and its cool how you can see that other people are also feeling that way too. Juice Wrld gets really vulnerable sometimes. I feel really proud of that.
Interview with Ibrahim: What drew you into emo rap?
Answer: I was in high school. Juice Wrld was really popular. I remembered watching his music video. He is one of the most popular emo rappers. I feel like Juice Wrld really expanded the idea of rap. Juice has his own edition, similar to how Drake and Kanye have their own. You can't ignore the content, but emo rap felt new different. It is another evolution in rap in general.
Interview with Greg: Why do people listen to emo rap?
Answer: It was fun to workout to and skate to the music of emo rap. I think there is a certain level of aggression in emo rap, and that's where I get my energy from. Emo-rap is the type of music that "fits your mood." It is something nice that you can work out too because it is high energy.
Interview with Carlos: Why do you listen to emo rap?
Answer: Some of my favorite artists are Lil Peep and Juice Wrld. They hit a little bit close to home. I always play emo rap rap in the background. I got into emo rap through Youtube and I was just scrolling through the comments section. I saw people talking about these artists. If someone played this type of music at a party, I definitely would feel hyped up.
