Response from Non-Emo Rap Listeners
Due to emo rap's distinct feature of having such openness to explicity and dark content, we showed clips of emo rappers to non-listeners of the genre to get a perspective of what the outside group feels about this type of music.
Interview with Maria: Looking at these pictures of emo rappers, what's your initial impression?
Answer: I think they are more tatted. They all have a similar look. Now, that you mentioned that they are emo rappers, I feel like their look pretty distinct. Their music makes me question why their music was made. It is not necessarily bad. Their words are honesty more explicit compared to other artists, who just don't say it. Their music doesn't make me feel sad. Artists such as Billie Ellish makes me sadder, compared to emo rap.
Interview with Matt: What is your impression reacting to "Sad!"? (A music video made by XXXtentacion)
Answer: I felt that is was really chaotic. I wasn't quite sure why XXX was fighting those guys. It was definitely really high energy. I feel like you are upset this is a good way to express your anger. I feel like this is a good way to encapsulate how you would feel if you are angry.
Interview with Angel (1): What's your reaction to emo rap music?
Answer: I thought it was catchy and sad. If I was at a party, I feel like I wouldn't feel that uncomfortable. In general, I feel like its really catchy. I have heard XXX and its just fits my vibe.Â
Interview with Angel (2): How do you feel about how emo rap is so open on topics such as suicide and depression?
Answer: I find it really weird that emo rap normalizes how people feel and share about these topics. Whenever people talk about suicide in their music, I feel like people nowadays don't talk their stance on suicide completely seriously. As a result, I feel like being open about these topics doesn't affect anything that much.
