When you apply for jobs online, your resume will likely go through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). These systems filter resumes for employers and look for very specific information. If you are submitting your resume through an online application, you should make sure your resume is formatted in a way to get through these systems and reach a real human being. The phrasing you use can be very impactful because resumes with industry specific keywords that reflect the skills and experience given in the job description are heavily favored by these systems.
✅ Use standard PC fonts such as Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Garamond, Cambria, Georgia.
✅ Align your job titles with the role description. If your job title of your previous role does not adequately capture what you did, use parenthesis to supplement. For example, "Social Media Coordinator (Communications)"
✅ Use simple headings for each section (i.e. "Experience", "Education", etc.)
✅ Try to reach out to a connection inside of the company to elevate your application.
❌Do not rely solely on an online job application.
