Resume Keywords & Strategies

When you apply for jobs online, your resume will likely go through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). These systems filter resumes for employers and look for very specific information. If you are submitting your resume through an online application, you should make sure your resume is formatted in a way to get through these systems and reach a real human being. The phrasing you use can be very impactful because resumes with industry specific keywords that reflect the skills and experience given in the job description are heavily favored by these systems.

Resume Tips for Getting Through the ATS

Do

Use keywords for your industry (see this page for more tips) and keywords used in the job description. Your resume and cover letter should align with the job description.

Use standard PC fonts such as Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Garamond, Cambria, Georgia.

Align your job titles with the role description. If your job title of your previous role does not adequately capture what you did, use parenthesis to supplement. For example, "Social Media Coordinator (Communications)"

Use simple headings for each section (i.e. "Experience", "Education", etc.)

Try to reach out to a connection inside of the company to elevate your application.

Don't

Do not use unusual layouts or excessive columns. This may lead the ATS to mix up your information.

Do not use photos, graphics, icons, or large blocks of color

Do not put important information, such as your name or contact details, in headers or footers. ATS may not catch this.

Do not rely solely on an online job application.
