Section 2: Getting Your Role Approved

Internship Authorization - Getting Your Role Approved

You are not authorized to begin working until your internship has been approved by Rian and you have completed a DS-7002 (training plan). If you begin working without submitting a DS-7002 form and receiving approval from Rian, you will be in violation of your visa for beginning an internship illegally, and without authorization from your visa sponsor. This serious violation can result in your visa being ended.

Once you receive a job offer, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: Submit Job Description

The first step for getting your role approved is to submit a description of your role for us to verify it is aligned with your area of study and visa requirements (see list of requirements in Section 1). Please submit an update through the Job Update Form about your job offer with a detailed description of your role that clearly shows the connection between your role and area of study. You can submit this update by signing-in to your Job Update Form here and following the instructions below:

Step 2:  Preliminary Approval & DS-7002 Instructions

After you submit the update, we will review your submission to verify if it is a fit for your area of study and visa requirements. If the position is preliminarily approved as a fit for your visa, we will send you detailed instructions for completing your DS-7002. Please note: your role will not be completely approved at this time and you will not be permitted to begin work until your DS-7002 is entirely complete, approved, and uploaded to your SEVIS record.

Step 3: Complete DS-7002

Complete a draft of your DS-7002 following the instructions emailed to you and send the completed draft to j1iwt@riancenter.org. Our team will review your draft and advise on if any corrections are required. Once your DS-7002 is entirely complete and no corrections are needed, we will sign and upload it to your SEVIS record and you will be notified that you can begin working.

Please note: You should let your employer know that you cannot begin working immediately and allow 5-7 days to complete the approval process outlined above when setting your proposed start date.
