Functional Communication
What is Functional Communication?
Functional communication involves using the mode of communication preferred by your child (Picture Communication, Sign Language, Verbal Communication, Proloquo) to communicate their wants and needs. The importance of teaching communication is so that your child learns a more appropriate way of gaining access to things they desire instead of engaging in inappropriate behavior (i.e. tantrums, aggression, etc.).
¿Qué es la comunicación funcional?
La comunicación funcional implica el uso del modo de comunicación preferido por su hijo (Picture Communication, Sign Language, Verbal Communication, Proloquo) para comunicar sus deseos y necesidades. La importancia de enseñar comunicación es para que su hijo aprenda una forma más apropiada de obtener acceso a las cosas que desea en lugar de participar en un comportamiento inapropiado (es decir, berrinches, agresión, etc.).
How do I teach this?
You should start with teaching your child to ask for things they like. You can see what items are preferred by observing what your child engages with for long periods of time or items they always choose.
When you identify this item you will withhold the item until your child uses their preferred mode of communication to ask for access to the item. Immediately upon your child asking for the item, you should give your child access and praise them for communicating appropriately! It is recommended to keep reinforcing your child requesting the item until they are able to request access independently and consistently.
