PBIS (Positive Behavior interventions and Supports) is an organized, data driven system of interventions, strategies, and supports that positively impact school wide and individualized behavior.
This support is organized into three distinct tiers. Tier I (whole school) supports are provided to all students. Tier II (individual students or group of at-risk students) supports are designed for students who are struggling within the parameters of Tier I and need additional, small group intervention. Tier III supports are designed as intensive, individual supports for students who need the most intervention. Tier III (students with complex needs and behaviors that severely impact the student, school and/or community function) supports involve many different stakeholders including teachers, support personnel, parents, and sometimes outside support personnel.
Why is it so important to focus on teaching positive social behaviors?
Teachers are increasingly confronted with issues dealing with behavior on a daily basis.
It is imperative to the learning environment for students to understand the explicit expectations for the school and the individual classroom environments. Remember that students are moving through a variety of settings each day. Each of these settings may have expectations specific to their location. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step to maintaining a productive learning environment. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a proactive and preventative approach to creating a culture where appropriate behavior across all settings is the norm.
