Students in grade eleven study the major events, movements, and figures that shaped the United States from its founding to the present, with particular emphasis on the late nineteenth century through the twenty-first century. They examine the development of the American political system, economic growth, and social change, as well as the nation’s role in world affairs. Students analyze the causes and consequences of key turning points such as the Civil War and Reconstruction, industrialization, the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War. They evaluate the expansion and limitations of democratic ideals in American history, recognizing that these ideals have often been contested and redefined. Students connect historical events to contemporary U.S. issues, understanding them within their political, economic, social, and cultural contexts. They consider multiple perspectives to develop a deeper understanding of how diverse voices have shaped and continue to shape the American experience.
