How to Continue to Develop and Narrow Topic

Narrowing a Research Topic

Think of an upside-down triangle that moves from a broad subject to a narrow topic.  Ask yourself questions through 4 different lenses to fill in your pyramid.

  1. Is there a particular group of people that you want to focus on?

  • gender, age, ethnic background, nationality, profession, etc.

  1. Is there a particular place you want to focus on?

    • geographical, workplace, or situational

  2. Is there a particular time period you want to focus on?

    • present day, specific historical event, decades, etc.

  3. Is there a particular point of view from which you would like to approach this topic?

    • economic, legal, political, psychological, scientific, religious, etc.

Consult the video for examples of this process, as well as how to use it to generate a research question and project title.

The Rock Solid Research Guidelines were created by the RHS Secondary School Librarians in Rock Hill, SC from 2022-2023.  The "Plan, Do, Review" terms are also used with the Super3 research model. Please reach out to your school librarian if you have any questions or need support.  Last updated: November 8, 2024.
